Suusamyr as a high-altitude region

Suusamyr is a high-altitude valley surrounded by the snow-capped peaks of the Tian Shan. The Suusamyr Valley stretches approximately 100 kilometers from east to west and is up to 40 kilometers wide. The Kyrgyz Range runs along the valley, with peaks reaching up to 4,500 meters. This brings together a broad valley and a striking mountain backdrop. The view encompasses both the peaks and the valley as a distinct landscape in its own right. If you are considering Suusamyr as a destination, you can regard this landscape as a reason to travel in its own right, alongside the specific activities and types of stay mentioned here.

Paragliding and season

For paragliding, conditions are generally characterized by strong thermals from May to September; an agreed maximum altitude of 5,000 meters applies. This period provides a seasonal framework, while specific conditions remain weather-dependent. The 5,000 meters is an agreed upper limit, not a promise that this altitude will be reached during a flight. When planning, distinguish between the season and the weather on any given flight day.

Stays between rooms and yurts

The FlyKG Suusamyr base provides rooms and a kitchen; grassy areas are used for landing and preparing paragliders. Check the availability of these facilities before you arrive. Turan Camp is an ethno-camp in the Suusamyr Valley focused on Kyrgyz nomadic culture. It offers standard and upgraded rooms, as well as stays in a shared yurt. The camp also organizes horseback riding tours for visitors. FlyKG’s rooms and areas for paragliding can thus be compared with the accommodation options and horseback riding tours at the culture-focused Turan Camp.

Food and local character

Breakfast is included at Turan Camp; you can order lunch and dinner from a menu. Elsewhere in the Suusamyr Valley, roadside yurts sell freshly baked bread, butter, kuurdak, kurut and kumys. For meal planning, this means a difference between meals you can order at the camp and products sold at roadside yurts. Yurt-based ethnotourism and newer glamping accommodations are also associated with the valley. The village of Suusamyr has recreational facilities that welcome foreign guests. The food and glamping information applies to the valley, while the recreational facilities are in the village.

Ski base and freeriding

The Suusamyr Ski Base is located at kilometer 158 of the Bishkek–Osh highway, in the valley at an elevation of 2,260 meters. Freeriding on ungroomed snow with a snowcat is one of the options at the Suusamyr Ski Base. Before your trip, check whether ski operations and equipment are currently available. The distinction is relevant to your travel plans: May to September is the general period for paragliding; for freeriding, check the current availability of operations and equipment.
