Tharaka Nithi lies east of Mount Kenya. The volcanic activity of Mount Kenya shapes the topography of Tharaka Nithi and forms V-shaped valleys. There are also named hills in two parts of the area: Kiera, Munuguni and Njuguni are in Maara, while Kijege, Gikingo and Ntugi are in Tharaka. This brings large-scale geological formations together with specifically named elevations. The distribution of the hills between Maara and Tharaka grounds the landscape description in several parts of the county. When you picture the landscape, both the V-shaped valleys and the individual groups of hills come into view.

Landscape and tourism

The county plan describes tourism in Tharaka Nithi as still being in an early stage of development. In this context, it mentions few tourists and few tourist facilities. It lists mountains, hills, waterfalls, expansive landscapes, diverse wildlife and agritourism as features that support tourism. Nature and agriculture are therefore presented as distinct themes: landforms and wildlife form one part of the picture, while agriculture adds another. This overview gives you a sense of the direction of tourism in the county.

Part of Mount Kenya Forest lies in Tharaka Nithi County. The county plan describes this part of the forest within the county as a tourist attraction. The statements about natural features are framed differently: the forest area is explicitly described as an attraction, while the other features mentioned are presented as supporting tourism. Thus, a named forest stands alongside a broader range of different nature- and agriculture-related themes.

Cultural diversity and events

The Chuka, Muthambi, Mwimbi and Tharaka live in Tharaka Nithi County; they belong to the larger Ameru community. These four names and their affiliation give cultural diversity a specific context. Alongside this social perspective are named cultural events, each with its own dates and programme.

A county government post dated 20 September 2025 describes the Ura Gate Tharaka Nithi Cultural Festival as a platform for cultural exchange. By 2025, the festival had reached its seventh edition. It therefore combines an explicitly stated purpose of fostering exchange with the number of editions held by that point.

The Tharaka Cultural Celebrations took place from 21 to 23 May 2026 at Marimanti Nyangumi Stadium. The programme included traditional dances, cultural exhibitions and indigenous cuisine. Dance, exhibitions and cuisine thus featured side by side in the same limited-time programme, offering different ways to experience the celebrations.

The dates refer to two different things: the Ura Gate Festival had reached its seventh edition by 2025; the Tharaka Cultural Celebrations took place over three days in May 2026. This distinguishes a milestone in the festival’s history from a dated event programme.
