West Kazakhstan is considered the only region of Kazakhstan located almost entirely in Europe. Its landscape extends from the Caspian Depression and the foothills of the General Syrt and the Pre-Urals Plateau to the sand massifs of Narynkum. The Ural, also known as the Zhaiyk, is the region’s most important waterway. In Uralsk, the city lies on the right bank of the Ural and the left bank of the Chagan—so two rivers already shape its geographical orientation.
Rivers, Lakes, and Vast Protected Areas
The scale of the nature reserves gives an impression of the vastness of the landscape: the Bokeiorda State Nature Reserve covers 343,040.1 hectares, while the Ashchiozek Nature Reserve covers 314,504.1 hectares. Both extend across the Bokeiorda, Zhanibek, Kaztalov, and Zhangala districts. Bokeiorda was established to preserve the habitat of the Ural saiga population. The protected areas thus place a different emphasis from the historic sites and museums: here, the focus is on the landscape and its habitats.
The region’s large lakes include Schalkar, Aralsor, Botkol, Zhaltyrkol, and Sulukol. Schalkar is located in Terekti District and is of ecological, scientific, cultural, recreational, and aesthetic importance. Bird species found there include swans, geese, ducks, flamingos, and gulls. The water is characterized as saline chloride-sodium mineral water; it also contains calcium bicarbonate, magnesium, and other minerals. Besides the Ural/Zhaiyk, the region’s rivers include Saryozen, Karaozen, Kaldygayty, Olenty, Buldurty, and Shyngyrlau.
Uralsk and Its Museum History
Numerous 19th-century buildings have been preserved in Uralsk. These include the Vanushin Merchant House, the Pugachev House Museum, the Red Mosque, and the Karev House. The city’s historic character can be viewed alongside the region’s long museum history: the West Kazakhstan Regional Museum of History and Local Lore is one of Kazakhstan’s oldest museums, with a history spanning almost two centuries.
The museum is housed in a building constructed in 1879, originally built as a Russian-Kazakh school and designated an architectural monument. In its archaeological department, finds from the Kyryk Oba and Segizsai burial grounds offer a glimpse into the region’s early history. West Kazakhstan has 25 museums in total. Alongside the Regional Museum, these include the Zhaiyk Museum-Reserve and the Khan Ordasy Historical, Cultural, Architectural, and Ethnographic Museum-Reserve. Khan Ordasy is considered an important cultural and historical site in West Kazakhstan; 16 objects within the museum-reserve are protected at the national level.
Archaeological Traces and Experiences
Archaeology is a defining theme beyond the museums, too. The Taksay burial mound complex in Terekti District is a significant archaeological monument from the Sarmatian period. Three burial mounds have been excavated at the Segizsai complex, also known as Lebedevka. Finds from the site are attributed to Sarmatian tribes of the 2nd to 3rd centuries BCE. The Archaeological Museum of the West Kazakhstan Innovation and Technology University displays dioramas and burials arranged according to archaeological chronology; a model of a medieval settlement’s fortress wall is also on view.
Those interested in equestrian culture and nature experiences can find horse-riding activities at the Sayat Ethnotourism Center. These include riding lessons, traditional equestrian sports, and educational excursions into the local natural environment. Ethnographic and ecological tourism meet there around themes of nomadic heritage. Fishing is an established activity in the region in both summer and winter. Facilities include the Dongelek Fishing House and the Sayat Recreation Base; Sayat has nine jetties on a lake and the Ural.
Fishbarmak, a fish-based version of the national dish associated with West Kazakhstan, offers a culinary discovery. The region can be explored through a range of interests: river and lake landscapes, nature conservation and birdlife, or museums, archaeology, and local food culture. When planning your trip, you can choose the focus that appeals to you most.
