Pavlodar combines distinctive religious architecture with museums that each offer a different perspective on the city’s history and culture. Seasonal events along the Ertis Promenade on the Irtysh add to the mix. When planning your visit, choose according to your interests: the mosque shapes the cityscape with its architecture, while the museums focus on subjects including photography, song, sound recordings and the history of the Second World War.

Mashkhur Zhusup Mosque: Architecture and Religious Culture

In the centre of Pavlodar, the Mashkhur Zhusup Mosque stands on landscaped grounds covering 6.2 hectares, with trees and green spaces. The building is octagonal; four minarets, each 63 metres high, and a 54-metre-high dome give it a distinctive silhouette. Its dimensions and basic form make the mosque a special point of interest for anyone interested in architecture.

The mosque houses a museum on the history of Islam and the mosque, a library and a video hall. Activities at the religious institution include discussions in Kazakh and Russian, as well as educational programmes focused on spiritual development. Architecture, religious history and contemporary cultural life come together at this site.

Photography, City History and Collections

The D. P. Bagaev House Museum is devoted to photography and local history. It is Pavlodar’s only memorial museum and also Kazakhstan’s only museum dedicated to a photographer and local historian. The exhibits are spread across three rooms; the house also includes a restored photography pavilion attached to the building. The museum also works with contemporary photographers and develops displays for their exhibitions.

The Shafer House offers a different kind of collection: it is Kazakhstan’s only museum of gramophone records. Its holdings include 25,000 records, 1,500 tape recordings and 1,500 audio cassettes; collection figures may change over time. The programme includes evenings centred on audio recordings, as well as literary and musical events featuring writers, musicians and artists from Pavlodar. Programme details may vary.

The House Museum of Song Art of Maira Shamsutdinova opened in 2001 in a heritage building dating from 1900. A visit therefore connects the history of a historic building with a museum devoted to song. Visitors who want to explore Pavlodar through its varied cultural collections can compare this focus with the history of photography and sound recordings.

History and Remembrance

The Museum of Military Glory focuses on exhibits from the Second World War: authentic weapons, photographs, orders, medals, personal documents and letters. The museum also offers presentations, academic conferences and patriotic clubs. Its focus thus ranges from personal letters and images to military objects.

The Potanin Regional Museum of History and Local Lore accepts requests for visits and guided tours. The D. P. Bagaev House Museum is open Tuesday to Sunday, from 09:00 to 18:00; check these hours before your visit. If you are planning a guided tour at the Potanin Museum, enquire there. This allows you to coordinate set plans with the options available at each museum.

Seasonal Events along the Ertis Promenade

The Ertis Promenade along Pavlodar’s central riverfront on the Irtysh offers concerts, evening discos, open-air films and outdoor workouts. The programme is seasonal; check event dates before your visit. Unlike the museums, with their collections and historical themes, the promenade is a place for a changing programme of outdoor events.
