Syrdariya District offers several ways to explore its history: the district museum in the Ruhaniyat Center, archaeological settlements, and religious buildings. Visitors who want to focus on museums, medieval history, or architecture can plan their stay around these themes. The named sites are located at different reference points within the district; their distance information helps with orientation.

Ruhaniyat Museum and Cultural Center

The district museum was founded in 1990 and has operated as a district museum since 1997. It is located in the Ruhaniyat Center, which opened in Syrdariya District on February 20, 2025. Under one roof, Ruhaniyat brings together a museum, a library, an archive, a youth center, a veterans’ center, and a mothers’ center. This institutional composition may change. The center hosts cultural and educational events, exhibitions, and gatherings for residents and visitors; programs and dates may change. Check current visitor arrangements and event times before your visit.

The museum collection includes more than 11,000 exhibits; this number may change over time. The displays include, among other things, items belonging to Heroes of the Soviet Union and Heroes of Socialist Labor, deputies of the Supreme Soviet of the Kazakh SSR, district leaders, and war and labor veterans. There are also works by applied arts craftspeople and painters. The exhibition content may also change. A visit to the museum thus combines the history of regional institutions with personal belongings and artworks from a range of fields.

Asanas, Asanas Ata, and Kyzkala

The archaeological settlement of Asanas is in Syrdariya District, 15 kilometers west of the village of Aidarly. It dates from the 12th to the 15th century and lies on the left bank of the Syr Darya along the historic Silk Road. Its documented history includes destruction during the Mongol invasion, subsequent reconstruction, and continued occupation until the 14th or 15th century. Further archaeological research may refine this historical classification.

The Asanas Ata Mausoleum is a separate point of reference: it lies 15 kilometers southwest of Aidarly and 40 kilometers southeast of Qyzylorda, also in Syrdariya District. The structure was built of square fired bricks measuring 23 Ă— 23 Ă— 5 centimeters; its ground plan measures 7.18 Ă— 8.83 meters. Following a restoration in 2010, the mausoleum was classified as a local heritage monument and designated a tourist site. A local legend links it to Karakalpak master builders and says that a granddaughter of Asanas Ata was buried there. Check current access arrangements separately before visiting.

The settlement of Kyzkala lies two kilometers east of the village of Kogalyköl and dates from the 13th to the 15th century. It is also known by the names Barchinkent, Barchinlygkent, Bardjinligkent, Kyzqala, and Tashqala. During the Golden Horde period, Kyzkala was an important trading center and was connected with the historic Silk Road. The buildings were constructed of fired ceramics; religious buildings were clad with glazed ceramic applications. Further research may refine the dating and historical classification.

Religious Architecture and Landscape

The Kaljan-Akhun Mosque-Madrasa lies twelve kilometers west of the village of Kaljan Akhun. Its brick architectural style is considered characteristic of the 19th and 20th centuries. The religious teacher Kaljan Akhun Bolekbayevich is associated with the building; he spread Islam there and taught students. The sites therefore represent distinct historical themes: Asanas and Kyzkala are archaeological settlements, while the mosque-madrasa highlights religious education and later brick architecture.

The landscape also provides a framework for orientation: the entire district lies in the Turan Lowland and is mostly flat. In the north and south there are smaller ridges, low mountains, and sandy hills; in the north lie the Aryskum Sands and the Daryalyktakyr plain. The Syr Darya and its tributaries, including Shirkeyli and Karozek, flow through the district. Lakes Arys and Telikol lie in the northern part; seasonal water conditions may vary.

A 40-kilometer section of the Orenburg–Tashkent railway runs through the district. The Kyzylorda–Zhosaly and Tasboget–Zhosaly road corridors also pass through it. This information provides spatial orientation but does not replace checking current timetables or road conditions.
