Minami-Alps can be explored through a range of themes: alpine flora, archaeological finds, mountain culture, and seasonal blossoms or cherries. It is also home to a nationally designated historic site and a city marathon. Two questions can help with your trip planning: Would you like to focus on nature or culture, and does a seasonal experience matter for your travel dates?

Mountain Nature and Spring Blossoms

Kitadakeso, an alpine plant endemic to the area, grows near the summit of Kita-dake. It represents the high-alpine plant life around the mountain. Another natural feature marks Minami-Alps in spring: every spring, peach trees bloom across a wide area, coloring the city like a pink carpet of blossoms. The distinctive flora near the summit and the city’s expansive floral display thus offer two different ways to experience nature.

Museums Exploring Everyday History and Mountain Culture

The Furusato Cultural Heritage Museum displays pottery, stone tools, and traditional household items excavated from archaeological sites in Minami-Alps. The exhibits offer insight into different aspects of local life and the past.

The Ashiyasu Mountain Museum has a different focus. It collects and displays books about the spiritual world shaped by the mountains, and also makes them available to researchers. In addition, the museum shows real-time footage of Kita-dake and mountain ridges with peaks up to 3,000 meters high on a large screen. Check before your trip whether the large screen is available. The two museums have distinctly different focuses: one centers on finds from Minami-Alps, the other on books and large-format mountain imagery.

Historic Levees and an Observation Platform

The Masugata Levee forms part of the nationally designated historic site of the old Midaigawa Levees. The site includes Shogito, Ishizumide, and Masugata. The Masugata Levee also has an observation platform that visitors can climb; the area has been open to the public since March 28, 2024. Check the current access conditions before visiting. Here, historical significance and an observation platform come together in one place.

Mountain Hikes, a Marathon, and Cherry Picking

Yashajin Pass is a starting point for climbing the HĹŤĹŤ Sanzan. From there, it is possible to make the ascent in about an hour. Mountain conditions can vary, so take them into account when planning your hike.

The Togenkyo Marathon is a major event in Minami-Alps and attracts athletes and tourists. If you would like to plan your trip around the marathon, check the event dates.

The cherry-picking season also starts particularly early in Minami-Alps: from May, you can pick and enjoy fresh cherries at the city’s farms for almost two months. Around 70 of the tourism association’s member businesses are cherry-picking farms; this number may change. Some farms offer the chance to try different varieties of cherries.

A Trip to the Surrounding Area

Near Minami-Alps is Inagako, a small lake in the former Kushigata area. It consists of Southern Inagako and Northern Inagako. The surrounding area includes the prefectural forest and the garden areas of Shobugaike, where visitors can take walks. This adds another opportunity to enjoy nature and go for a walk nearby to the museums, levees, and mountain-related attractions.

Plan Your Travel Dates and Hotels

If you’re looking for a hotel in Minami-Alps, planning around the seasons can help you choose when to travel: peach blossoms appear every spring, while cherry picking is possible for almost two months from May. The Togenkyo Marathon has its own event dates; check them before booking if you’d like to plan your trip around it. If mountain hikes are your main focus, also take the changing mountain conditions into account.
