One of Japan’s largest karst plateaus lies in Yamaguchi Prefecture: Akiyoshidai. Its expansive grassland offers a different perspective on the region from its coasts and historic sites. Akiyoshido is also a natural highlight: its limestone caves contain stalactites, stalagmites and still pools of water. Above ground, the open karst landscape shapes the impression; underground, rock formations and water take center stage.
Akiyoshidai is a quasi-national park and is designated as a Special Natural Monument of Japan. Beyond this area, the prefecture offers plenty of variety for exploring nature: Yamaguchi has a total of eight natural parks. If you plan to visit Akiyoshido, you can reach the cave by taking a bus from Shin-Yamaguchi Station to the Akiyoshido Bus Center; the journey takes about 40 minutes. For Senjojiki, a rental car or taxi is described as the easiest way to get there.
Grassland, sea and expansive views
Senjojiki combines a vast area of unspoiled grassland with a location on the Sea of Japan. The area covers 26,400 square meters; from there, the view stretches across the water to the horizon. This coastal landscape stands in clear contrast to the caves and karst: rather than underground formations, the focus here is on open spaces and sea views.
Another appealing spot for views of the water is Tsunoshima Bridge, which offers views of the cobalt-blue sea. The area around Tsunoshima can be reached from Shimonoseki Station by JR train and bus. The suggested routes offer different starting points for planning: a rental car or taxi is the easiest way to reach Senjojiki, while the route to the area around Tsunoshima is described as a train-and-bus connection.
Pagodas, historic sites and ceramics
In Yamaguchi, the five-story pagoda at Rurikoji Temple tells a story of a long building history: it was built in 1442. Kozan Park, in central Yamaguchi, offers another perspective on the city. It is known for its cherry and plum blossoms, as well as azaleas and hydrangeas. You can reach the park from Yamaguchi Station with a short bus ride. Rosan-do briefly served as a teahouse in the mid-19th century and was a center of political influence in the region; the area’s political history thus complements its landscapes.
Hagi brings together historic streetscapes, art and crafts. The former castle town includes five World Heritage Sites; samurai residences and streets lined with white walls and orange trees have been preserved there. The Yamaguchi Prefectural Art Museum/Uragami Memorial Hall in central Hagi primarily exhibits ukiyo-e works, Asian ceramics and pottery. Hagi ware is practical pottery with simple forms and textures. Fine cracks, spots and colors in the glaze are among its distinctive features. Those interested in culture will find several ways to explore it here: the town’s history in its streetscape, art in the museum and regional design in its ceramics.
Crafts, cuisine and regional experiences
At Yanai Nishigura, visitors can make a traditional Yanai goldfish lantern themselves; allow about 30 minutes for the activity. In Shunan, Taku-shu takes visitors by taxi to three breweries, with sake tastings and small snacks. These are different ways to experience regional craft traditions and drinking culture: one involves making your own lantern, the other a tour with tastings.
The prefecture’s dishes also have their own preparation methods. Kawara Soba consists of noodles made with green tea powder, beef and other ingredients, served on a heated roof tile. Fukusashi is pufferfish sliced thinly and arranged on a plate in the shape of chrysanthemums or cranes. These dishes add a culinary dimension to Yamaguchi’s landscapes, history and crafts.
Ube Airport serves as a regional gateway to Yamaguchi Prefecture. Which places you focus on depends on whether you want to explore karst landscapes and caves, coastal views, historic buildings or local crafts and cuisine. You can plan your trip around the themes that interest you most.
