In Toyama Prefecture, possible travel interests range from cultural heritage and traditional craftsmanship to mountain landscapes, seasonal experiences and regional cuisine. When choosing accommodation, it helps to first decide which of these themes you want to shape your stay. The different places offer a variety of points of interest rather than prescribing a single, ready-made itinerary.
Cultural Heritage and Craftsmanship
Zuiryuji is the only temple in Toyama Prefecture that is also a National Treasure. Each spring, a sound and light show highlights the temple complex; dates may vary. In Gokayama, Ainokura is designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The traditional houses there are between 100 and 350 years old. At the Gokayama Washi Paper Making Experience Hall, visitors can make washi paper—another way to experience local craftsmanship, beyond simply viewing the historic houses.
Inami is known for its woodcarving and is recognized as a Japanese cultural heritage site. On Yokamachi Dori, you can watch woodcarving workshops at work and try carving wood yourself under the guidance of a master craftsperson. This means that in Toyama, the program can include both observing craftsmanship and trying it yourself.
Glass can also be explored from different perspectives. The Toyama Glass Art Museum is located in Toyama Kirari, a multipurpose building with a library designed by Kengo Kuma. On the sixth floor, the Glass Art Garden features an installation by glass artist Dale Chihuly. At Toyama Glass Studio, visitors can watch glassblowers at work and make their own mouth-blown glass object or paperweight.
Mountain Landscapes and Seasonal Experiences
The Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route is a mountain excursion route that extends across Toyama and Nagano prefectures and crosses the Northern Japanese Alps. On the Toyama side, the Murodo Snow Corridor is one of the experiences described: snow walls there can reach up to 20 meters high. Visitors can walk alongside them and take photographs. The snow walls are seasonal; access depends on the operating period.
Shomyo Falls offers a different perspective on the landscape. Its cascade is 350 meters high, making it Japan's tallest waterfall. From the Shomyodaira parking lot, a well-maintained path leads to the foot of the falls in about 30 minutes. Access is subject to seasonal snow and weather conditions. This provides a specific guide to the walk, while at the Murodo attraction, the season itself plays a special role.
The Kurobe Gorge Trolley Train travels 20.1 kilometers upriver from Unazuki Station to Keyakidaira. There are hot springs and viewpoints at the route's four stations. Seasonal operations may vary. This makes the ride different from the two mountain experiences mentioned above: here, the focus is on a set railway route and its stations, while the others feature snow walls or a path to a waterfall.
Flowers and Regional Cuisine
At Tonami Tulip Park, several tulip displays come together: the park has flower beds featuring 300 varieties of tulips, as well as floating hydroponic tulip beds in a pond. If you are more interested in regional cuisine, Namerikawa is home to the Hotaruika Museum. It is dedicated to the firefly squid, which is important to the local fishing industry and a popular part of regional cuisine. The museum restaurant serves squid dishes, including whole fried squid and squid pizza. As the selection may change, it is advisable to check the current menu before visiting.
The Trout Sushi Museum offers another culinary focus: it presents the techniques of experienced sushi masters and the traditional process of making Toyama trout sushi. Together with the Hotaruika Museum, it offers insight into two distinct aspects of regional food culture—the importance of a product to fishing and cuisine, and the making of a traditional dish.
Choose Hotels Based on Your Travel Focus
Next, choose the visits that matter most to you and plan your overnight stays around those specific plans. If you have several stops, plan the order and route for each one separately; the different themes alone do not form an itinerary.
