Yakushi-ike Park combines a pond at its center with seasonal highlights, including plum blossoms, camellias, cherry blossoms, Japanese irises, Ōga lotus, fresh greenery and autumn foliage. In the Machida municipality, you’ll also find play and water facilities, a walking route of about three kilometers, and cultural themes related to printmaking and literature. This lets you consider nature, exercise and culture as different focal points for your trip.
Parks and open spaces with different features
The seasonal highlights at Yakushi-ike include not only blossoms but also fresh greenery and autumn foliage. The park was included in the New Tokyo 100 Views in 1982, designated a Place of Scenic Beauty by Tokyo Metropolis in 1998, and selected for Japan’s Top 100 Historical Parks in 2007. These dates also give you a timeline for the three distinct designations.
Serigaya Park has a different focus: its facilities include a wading pool, a stream and the Rainbow and Water Plaza. There is also an adventure area with a Tarzan rope and various play equipment, as well as a multipurpose field. If you prioritize water and play areas when choosing a park, this offers a different combination from the scenic highlights at Yakushi-ike.
Machida Shibahiro is a multipurpose field with about 5,700 square meters of lawn. This sets it apart from the specific facilities named at Serigaya Park: here, the lawn is the main point of reference. The open spaces can therefore be distinguished by their stated features rather than treated as interchangeable parks.
Explore on foot and encounter animals
The Haramachida Seven Lucky Gods is a walking route of about three kilometers that can be visited year-round. Its stops are at temples, shrines and shopping streets around Machida Station. The route was established to mark the 50th anniversary of Machida City. Its length, religious sites and shopping streets give it a different character from the individual parks; the occasion for its creation is also part of its history.
At Machida Squirrel Garden, visitors can feed squirrels. Check the current conditions before visiting. There is also a petting area where visitors can touch guinea pigs and other animals; it is open on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays. If this area is important to you, take the specified days into account when planning your visit.
Printmaking, literature and local information
Machida City Museum of Graphic Arts specializes in printmaking and has a collection of more than 30,000 items. Printmaking is therefore a clearly defined cultural theme in the Machida municipality. Machida City Museum of Literature Kotobaran was opened on October 27, 2006, and offers another point of interest, this time focused on literature.
Exhibitions and events are planned to mark the library’s 20th anniversary. In collaboration with the library, these also include book lending and room rentals for creative activities. At the same time, a prolonged closure is planned from October 2026. Check before visiting to see whether the services are currently available.
The Machida Tourist Gallery information center offers information about attractions, events, restaurants and regional products in Machida City. It also sells Machida-related products, including local specialties. If you’d like to visit the information center in person or buy products, check the latest operating details in advance.
