Gotemba brings together historical connections, a regional soba tradition, a depiction of Mount Fuji and visible traces of a lava flow. A park and a shrine address different questions about local history; a theater and a lava tunnel offer different perspectives on visual representation and geology. A spring that visitors come to collect water from and a distillery tour round out the attractions. If you choose a destination based on specific interests, Gotemba offers several distinct points of interest.

Local History: Legacy and Place Name

The estate was bequeathed to the city of Gotemba at the princess’s request in her will and opened as Chichibunomiya Memorial Park in April 2003. Azuma Shrine stands on the site of a Tokugawa residence associated with the origin of the place name Gotemba. Together, the two sites represent two distinct historical threads: the park is about a bequest to the city and its opening, while the shrine is connected to the origin of the place name. If you are interested in local history, you can distinguish between a specific transfer of property and a historical connection to the name.

Mount Fuji in a Model and Traces of a Lava Flow

At the Tenku Theater, which charges admission and is located at Fuji Jukuu no Mori, projection mapping depicts Mount Fuji on a six-meter three-dimensional model as the seasons change. The model gives the depiction a three-dimensional form, while the changing seasons are its central theme. The focus is therefore not only on the shape of Mount Fuji, but also on how the projection portrays the mountain over the course of the year. If you are looking for a visual presentation, this is a distinct attraction. Admission arrangements may change; check them before your visit.

The Inno Lava Tunnel (Marubien) offers a different focus: there, you can see where the Inno-Maruo lava flow came to a halt. On April 8, 1927, the tunnel was designated a Natural Monument of Japan. The focus is clearly different for trip planning: the theater centers on a seasonal depiction of Mount Fuji, while the tunnel highlights a specific geological trace.

Fuji Jukuu no Mori has the “Bōken no Oka” and “Wanpaku Hiroba” play areas in Gotemba.

Spring Water, Soba and Distillery Tours

The spring water known as Konoha Meisui, originating from Mount Fuji, rises on the grounds of Niihashi Sengen Shrine. Visitors come to collect water, making the spring a specific reason to visit. This sets the shrine apart as a spring site from Azuma Shrine, which is connected to the history of the place name, and the lava tunnel, with its geological trace.

The food culture is also regionally rooted: in the Gotemba area, people traditionally served guests homemade soba at gatherings. The custom connects the dish with a social occasion and shows that the regional tradition also includes a way of sharing food with others.

Kirin Fuji Gotemba Distillery offers tours. As availability may change, check directly with the operator before your trip to see whether a tour is being offered.
