For a stay in Higashiōmi, culture and local history offer several distinct highlights: the origins of Goshu Ondo, a diverse kite collection, and walking tours covering different historical themes. The attractions around Yokaichi (八日市) focus on both living traditions and specific places. To plan your trip, you can first decide whether you are more interested in cultural history, kites or local history.

Goshu Ondo: Origins and Summer Tradition

八日市 is the birthplace of Goshu Ondo. About 150 years ago, Nishizawa Torakichi, the first Sakuragawa Tairyū from 八日市, created this tradition by incorporating elements of Nenbutsu Odori and Uta Nenbutsu. Its origins therefore trace back to two explicitly named traditions that came together in Goshu Ondo. Today, Goshu Ondo is celebrated nationwide as a summer tradition. Its history thus spans from its origins in 八日市 to a tradition now known beyond its birthplace.

At the Shōtoku Festival, 800 people take part in a group Goshu Ondo dance; the event is held in the plaza in front of 八日市 Station. The number of participants may vary from one edition to the next. This example adds a specific context to the historical perspective, in which the group dance is part of the festival.

Giant Kites and International Variety

The World Kite Museum Higashiomi Giant Kite Hall displays a Higashiomi Giant Kite measuring 100 tatami mats in size. The collection also includes regional and traditional Japanese kites, as well as colorful kites from around the world. A named giant kite from the region is presented alongside a wide selection of other kites. The collection ranges from a single large-scale kite to examples from different parts of the world, so a museum visit is not limited to just one type of kite.

The museum is in the Yokaichi area and is also a stop on the Yokaichi Town Walking Course (八日市まち歩きコース). If you are interested in the exhibition, you can also see it as part of a broader themed walk through the area. Other stops include 招福楼, 御代参街道, 旧住井歯科医院, 市神神社, 布引焼窯元 and 駅前グリーンロード.

Two Walking Tours, Two Historical Focuses

For the Yokaichi Town Walking Course (八日市まち歩きコース), the designated meeting point is the 近江鉄道 八日市 Station. The tour takes about 2 to 2.5 hours, and the guide can adjust the duration. Its stops bring together a range of local features, including a street, a former dentist's office, a shrine, the kite museum, a pottery workshop and 駅前グリーンロード. The tour therefore offers a broad introduction to the named places and cultural themes of 八日市.

The tour 市街地に残る戦争遺跡を巡るコース takes a different approach. It covers 飛行場線軌道跡, 陸軍八日市飛行場跡 and 掩体壕. While the first tour brings together different places and themes, this one focuses on three specific war relics. This distinction can help you choose: one route offers a varied program exploring the area, while the other focuses specifically on traces of wartime history.

Getting Your Bearings at 八日市 Station

八日市 Station is not only the meeting point for the Yokaichi Town Walking Course (八日市まち歩きコース). The Higashiomi City Yokaichi Station Tourist Information and Exchange Center (東近江市八日市駅前観光交流施設), a tourist information center, is also close to the station. The station is therefore a convenient reference point when planning your walk around town. When planning your time, keep in mind that the stated duration of about 2 to 2.5 hours can be adjusted.

The themes can be explored according to your interests: Goshu Ondo offers a glimpse into cultural history and its continued celebration as a summer tradition; the kite exhibition combines a large regional kite with an international collection; and the two walking tours take different approaches to local and wartime history. You can tailor your stay to the themes that interest you most and begin looking for accommodation with a clear idea of what you would like to experience in Higashiōmi.
