Takatsuki can be explored through a range of questions: How did rice cultivation develop, what do objects reveal about local life, and how is the natural environment studied? The Anma Ruins, several museums and the Akutagawa River each offer a different perspective. When planning your trip, you can first decide whether you are most interested in archaeological context, everyday history or observing nature.

Archaeological traces at the Anma Ruins

Anma Ruins Park is located in Hacchōnawate, Takatsuki. The Anma Ruins are considered the birthplace of rice cultivation in Takatsuki. There, archaeologists discovered a settlement established around 2,500 years ago and surrounded by a moat, rice fields and a collective burial mound. Taken together, these finds offer more than a single clue: the moat relates to the settlement’s layout, the fields to rice cultivation, and the collective burial mound to another aspect of life at the time. The approximate date points to the long history of rice cultivation in Takatsuki.

Finds and burial mound construction at the museum

The Imashirozuka Ancient History Museum focuses on haniwa and other archaeological finds from the Imashirozuka Kofun. Life-size dioramas and videos explain various findings about the construction of burial mounds. In contrast to the Anma Ruins, whose significance is linked to settlement and rice cultivation, this museum foregrounds its artefacts and burial mound construction.

Local life at Takatsuki Castle Park

Takatsuki Castle Park is located on the grounds of Takatsuki Castle. The park is home to the History and Folklore Museum. It preserves and displays household, agricultural and fishing equipment that bears witness to local life and livelihoods. The museum is housed in a merchant’s residence from the mid-Edo period that was relocated and reconstructed. This adds the architectural context of the merchant’s residence to the collection’s contents. If you want to choose which aspects of Takatsuki’s history to explore, you can distinguish between early traces of settlement and rice cultivation, finds and burial mound construction, or equipment used in household and working life.

Natural environment and Settsukyo

Aqua Pia Akutagawa collects, preserves and displays materials about Takatsuki’s natural environment. The facility also conducts field research to observe and study living things along the Akutagawa River and in Takatsuki. Its focus therefore ranges from presenting environmental materials to field research on living things.

Settsukyo lies in central Takatsuki along the middle and upper reaches of the Akutagawa River. The Settsukyo A Valley Course runs along the gorge, is 3.1 km long and has gentle ascents and descents. According to its description, it is also suitable for children and older people. Takatsuki thus offers different ways to explore nature: studying environmental materials and living things at Aqua Pia Akutagawa, or taking a clearly described route through the gorge. The course’s length and terrain offer different points of reference for choosing a visit than the museum’s exhibition and research work.
