Kunigami District and its wider surrounding area offer different travel highlights: forests, rivers, coastal formations, culture, and history. In Yambaru National Park, outdoor excursions are a frequent focus; at Asmui Hikes in Kunigami Village, an audio-guided grove and Okinawa’s stone culture add to the experience. Historic paths and individual natural attractions provide further highlights.
Forest and River in the Wider Area
In the wider surrounding area, excursions to scenic places, hiking, canoeing, riverside activities, and scenic drives are common in Yambaru National Park. One of Japan’s largest subtropical evergreen broadleaf forests stretches across the Yanbaru region. Many endemic and rare species live there, including the Okinawa rail; the area also has limestone sea cliffs, karst landscapes, and mangrove forests. The natural scenery thus ranges from forest to coastal formations and mangroves. When planning, consider whether you would prefer to hike, canoe, enjoy riverside activities, or include a scenic drive as part of your nature experience.
Yanbaru National Park is in the north of Okinawa Island, in Okinawa Prefecture. On September 15, 2016, it was designated Japan’s 33rd national park.
Asmui Hikes: Grove and Stone Culture
In Kunigami Village, an audio guide at Asmui Hikes leads visitors through a grove on the middle slope of Asmui. At the Stone Museum within Asmui Hikes, visitors can learn more about Okinawa’s stone culture. The two offerings have different focuses: the audio tour accompanies visitors along the path through the grove, while the museum highlights a cultural subject. If you are interested in both landscapes and culture, you can explore these themes together at Asmui Hikes.
Historic Paths and Landforms
In the wider surrounding area, near the ruins of Nakijin Castle, an old path follows the natural terrain. It was once used by kings and queens. The path can be seen from its front section. This historic connection sets the site apart from the nature activities in Yambaru National Park and adds another theme to your travel plans.
Manzamo is in a municipality in Kunigami District: a steep, grass-covered plateau of coral reef. From the headland, you can look out over the cobalt-blue sea and waves breaking against the rocks. Hiji Waterfall has a drop of 25.7 meters. A constructed path leads to the waterfall and takes about 40 minutes to walk. Unlike the scenery at Manzamo, the walk to the waterfall therefore adds a specific walking time to your plans. After heavy rain in November 2024, the entire facility, including the parking lot, was closed. Check whether it has since reopened before your visit.
Choose Hotels Based on Your Interests
Next, choose the specific places you want to visit and check their locations before fitting several activities into one day. This lets you compare hotels based on your planned destinations rather than solely on a general nature or culture theme. The walking time to Hiji Waterfall and the front section of the historic path also help you realistically assess different types of visits.
