Minamijo brings together landscapes, border history and miso in several distinct themes: the river terrace along the Hokkoku Kaidō, the former settlement of Nezumijuku with its checkpoint, and Nitta Jozo with its miso brewery, tastings and shop. The historical connections relate both to the location of the settlements and to the former border; Nitta Jozo adds the company’s history and current visitor offerings. This makes it possible to explore Minamijo from either a historical or culinary perspective.
River Terrace and Border History
The settlements along the Hokkoku KaidĹŤ, from Nezumi in Minamijo to Sakaki, were located on a river terrace, making them relatively safe from flooding. The river terrace is more than a landscape feature: its location explains a specific advantage for the settlements in this section. To understand the area, it is therefore worth considering the connection between the landscape and settlement history, rather than looking only at the route of the Hokkoku KaidĹŤ.
During the Edo period, Nezumijuku was a settlement in Minamijo. Because of its importance as a border with the Ueda Domain and Shimo-Shiojiri, a checkpoint was established there. This offers a different historical perspective from the river terrace: at Nezumijuku, the focus is on its role as a border, while for the settlements along the Hokkoku KaidĹŤ, it is their relatively secure location on the terrace.
Nitta Jozo: History and Miso
Nitta Jozo’s history reaches back to Nezumijuku in Minamijo. Oral accounts place the start of the business in the Edo period, but the exact year is unknown. The company’s history thus adds a different perspective to the historical connection with the checkpoint. The two Edo-period connections are distinct: Nezumijuku is identified as a settlement of that era, while the company’s beginnings are passed down through oral accounts, with no exact year.
Nitta Jozo is located in Sakaki, Minamijo. Visitors can tour the miso brewery and taste miso. The tour focuses on the brewery, while the tasting focuses on the product. If your main interest is culinary, the tasting is a direct way to experience miso; the tour adds an opportunity to learn about the business.
Nitta Jozo’s shop sells its own products alongside miso, including miso senbei, miso soft-serve ice cream, miso pudding and miso muffins. The selection ranges from miso senbei to soft-serve, pudding and muffins, offering a variety of product types. Unlike the tasting, the focus here is on specific products available in the shop.
The Danchi Festival, organized by the Techno-Sakaki Industrial Park Association, was a regular community event. The 24th edition was held on the plaza in front of Techno-Sakaki Station.
There are therefore several different themes to choose from: Nezumijuku offers a look at the historical border function, while Nitta Jozo combines company history with visitor experiences centered on miso. Those interested in both can consider the settlement’s history and the miso offerings as different perspectives on Minamijo.
