When choosing a hotel in Hakuba, it helps to have a clear travel focus: skiing in Hakuba Valley, cycling in Hakuba Village, or nature and culture. Hakuba Valley is an international mountain resort with ten ski areas at the foot of the Ushiro-Tateyama mountain range in northern Nagano Prefecture. Nature trails, wetlands and Olympic heritage offer additional highlights for your trip.

Ski areas and activities in the Happo area

Hakuba Happo-one is the largest resort in Hakuba Valley. Its key figures include 13 runs, a vertical drop of 1,071 meters and a run up to 8,000 meters long; these figures may change. Hakuba47 is another skiing option in Hakuba Village: it caters to advanced skiers with many steep runs. On the north-facing slope, runs are often open until May, depending on snow and weather conditions.

There are five onsen bathing facilities in the Happo area; the number may change. English-language ski and snowboard lessons and childcare services are also available there. Availability may vary, so it is advisable to confirm the services with local providers. This combination of slopes, bathing facilities and lessons can be a deciding factor when planning a trip focused on winter sports.

Cycling and exercise

The Scenic Short Cycling Route passes village sights in Hakuba Village along a gentle downhill grade. It is recommended for beginners and families with children. Rental bikes include electric bikes and mountain bikes; availability may change. The route’s current access conditions may also vary.

Hakuba Village has mountain biking parks that make use of ski areas and trails at the foot of the mountains. Guided tours are available for beginners through advanced riders; park and tour offerings may vary by season and provider. CHUMS RIDGE in Hakuba is an outdoor activity area with disc golf and mountain biking; its offerings may change. Options range from the described route with a gentle downhill grade to guided tours and mountain biking activities.

Scenery and nature

In the area around Hakuba, the Hakuba mountain range, a suspension bridge over the clear Himekawa River and an old thatched-roof house together create the landscape at Oide Park. In the nature experience garden at the Himekawa headwaters in Hakuba Village, rare plants from fens and raised bogs can be seen in the Oyomi Marsh. The source of the Himekawa is one of Japan’s 100 selected bodies of water.

Flowers bloom in the nature experience garden at different times of year; timing and abundance may vary. A well-maintained forest trail forms a circuit that takes about 90 minutes. For a seasonal visit, the Hakuba Goryu Alpine Botanical Garden has more than 300 flower species and two million plants from June to October. Hakuba also has a highland nature area with views of the Northern Japanese Alps.

Olympic heritage and getting there

Hakuba hosted several events during the 1998 Winter Olympics. At the Hakuba Ski Jumping Stadium, visitors can reach the takeoff area of the large hill at a height of about 140 meters and the takeoff area of the normal hill, and experience the views and elevation from the starting points. Visitor access may be seasonal. The Olympic Gallery displays materials related to the Nagano Winter Olympics and Paralympics.

There are different routes and arrival points. The Shinano Limited Express from Nagoya to Hakuba Station takes 3 hours and 34 minutes on the fastest connection; buses run from the station to Hakuba Happo-one. The fastest described journey from Tokyo to Hakuba Happo Bus Terminal takes 2 hours and 40 minutes: take the Hokuriku Shinkansen to Nagano, then an express bus to Hakuba. Travel times and schedules may change; check the latest connections before you travel.
