Nobeoka offers several distinct reasons to visit: an annual plum blossom festival, a three-day April festival, a museum dedicated to the city’s history and culture, and Ayu dishes during Ayu season. These events, cultural attractions, and seasonal cuisine follow different schedules. The best time for your visit depends above all on whether you want to focus on a particular festival, the city’s history, or seasonal cuisine.

Festivals at Different Times of Year

The Nobeoka Daishi Festival takes place every year in April and lasts three days. On the final day, a Daimyo procession and a parade, among other events, make their way through the city center. If these processions are what you’re most interested in, plan your visit for the final day. The date of the event you want to see is therefore a practical planning anchor, not just the month. Check the event date before booking so your stay coincides with the festival’s final day.

Another annual event takes place in early February: Hontōji holds its plum blossom viewing festival then. This gives you two clearly distinct times to visit. If you’re choosing between them, plan your trip around the experience you want: plum blossoms in February, or the Daimyo procession and parade at the end of the April festival. For a short trip, the two festivals are therefore separate date anchors, not part of a combined festival program.

Museum and Castle History

The Nobeoka Castle/Naito Memorial Museum opened as a museum in September 2022. It collects and preserves materials related to Nobeoka’s history and culture, and offers visitors the opportunity to view historical materials and works of art. It is located on the grounds of the western compound of Nobeoka Castle, where the residences of successive castle lords once stood. Here, the museum’s present-day mission meets the site’s former use: collecting and preserving materials is part of the museum’s work, while the residences provide the area’s historical context. If you want to focus on the city’s history, this is a cultural highlight distinct from the festivals held on set dates each year.

Ayu Dishes During the Season

Seasonal cuisine can also influence when you travel. The Kawazuru Yana Restaurant opens during Ayu season at Ose and serves Ayu dishes that bring out the fish’s natural flavors. For this culinary experience, the season matters—not the date of either festival. If you’d like to include these dishes in your plans, check in advance whether your stay falls during Ayu season.

Choose Your Travel Dates When Searching for Accommodation

The museum adds a cultural and historical reason to visit. This lets you base your accommodation search around a specific experience without treating the different dates as one combined program.
