Shiroishi’s history is reflected in different types of buildings: the three-story tower of Shiroishi Castle, the former samurai residence of the Koseki family and Sumaruyashiki. If you are planning a trip focused on cultural history, it is worth distinguishing between the reconstruction, the former residence and the architectural history of Sumaruyashiki. Together, they offer different ways to explore the history of this castle town: a reconstruction built using precise techniques, a residence whose location is connected to the former fortifications, and a complex featuring Shiroishi Washi and events.

Shiroishi Castle: Tower and Measurements

The three-story tower of Shiroishi Castle was reconstructed in March 1995. It is a wooden reconstruction based on traditional Japanese building methods. Its height is 16.7 meters, measured from the top of the stone castle wall. This means the height refers to the tower above the wall, not to a measurement from ground level.

The Former Koseki Residence

The former samurai residence of the Koseki family was built in 1730. It is located on the Sawabata River, north of Shiroishi Castle, on the site of the former outer moat. It is therefore associated both with its own architectural history and with its location in relation to the former fortifications. The residence was built in 1730, while March 1995 marks the reconstruction of the tower—a useful distinction when comparing historic buildings.

Sumaruyashiki: Architecture and Program

Sumaruyashiki includes a warehouse and shop building constructed between the mid-Meiji period and the Taishō period; the main house dates from the Taishō period. These time references distinguish a construction phase spanning a period of time from the era to which the main house is assigned. The complex broadens the picture of Shiroishi’s architectural history beyond the reconstructed castle tower. It is also about more than architecture: Shiroishi Washi is exhibited and sold throughout the year. Events on the history of the castle town are also held at Sumaruyashiki year-round. Before your trip, check the conditions for exhibitions and sales, as well as the dates of individual events. If an event determines when you travel, confirm its date before booking accommodation.

Getting There and Finding Your Way Around

Shiroishi Castle is about a 15-minute walk from JR Shiroishi Station; walking time may vary depending on the route. A one-day historical walking tour also starts at JR Shiroishi Station. This gives you two different timeframes to consider when planning your day: the approximate walking time to one destination and a full-day tour starting from the same station. You can therefore decide during your planning whether to focus on an individual visit to the castle or on the walking tour.

Bicycles are available to rent for sightseeing around the city from the tourist information centers at Shiroishi Station and Shiroishi-Zao Station, as well as from the Shiroishi Castle History Museum. Check availability and opening hours before your trip. Individual shops and access conditions may change along the historical walking tour, so check the stops relevant to your trip in advance.
