The volcanic complex known as Aso lies in the south of Aso City; its Nakadake remains active. The geological timescales of the landscape features mentioned range from several thousand to around 90,000 years. The ruins of Matoishi Ochaya offer a different perspective. They include an inn and a garden from the Edo period, where the processions of the Hosokawa domain stopped to rest at midday.
