Umaji can be explored through three specific points of interest: the HĹŤzĹŤzan Shinsui Hiroba campsite by the river, trails to Senbonyama, and the Yanase Forest Railway, where a locomotive is on display. These offer different options for focusing on hiking or culture. For the hiking trails, check access conditions and prepare for your trip; the railway is part of a recognised Japan Heritage theme. A bus ride from Yasuda Station also provides a practical reference for travelling to Yanase.

Riverside location and connection to Senbonyama

The Hōzōzan Shinsui Hiroba campsite is beside the Nishikawa, a tributary of the Nahari, about one kilometre upstream from the Senbonyama trailhead. The Nishikawa is therefore a separate point of reference from the Nahari, while the approximate distance also places the campsite in relation to the trailhead. You can locate it using these two clear reference points: the tributary and the Senbonyama trailhead. The term “upstream” indicates the direction of the campsite and makes its location more precise.

Hiking: access and preparation

No prior notification is required to access the trails to Senbonyama from the Senbonyama and Nakagawa trailheads. However, access may be denied in dangerous conditions or during forestry work; check the latest notice from the forestry authority before setting out. Tell a family member or relative in advance where and when you will be hiking and why, and let them know when you return. Planning your hike therefore involves two separate steps: checking the latest access notice and informing someone you trust. The fact that no prior access notification is required does not replace notifying your family or relatives.

The Yanase Forest Railway and its cultural heritage

A working Nomura-type locomotive is on display at the Yanase Forest Railway. It is associated with the Japan Heritage theme recognised by the Agency for Cultural Affairs: “From Forest Railway to Japan’s No. 1 Yuzu Road: The Scenery and Food Culture of the Naka-gen Region in Southern Tosa, Fragrant with Yuzu.” The title looks from the forest railway to the Yuzu Road and also names the scenery and food culture of the Naka-gen region in southern Tosa. The theme thus offers two distinct points of reference: the locomotive itself as an exhibit, and the broader context of the forest railway, Yuzu, scenery, and food culture. If you are interested in the locomotive, you can view it as a specific exhibit; the Heritage title also places it within a wider cultural theme.

Getting to Yanase

A bus runs from Yasuda Station to the Yanase district in about 40 minutes. This estimate refers to the bus journey; timetables and service levels may change, so check the connection before departure. The bus journey and the hiking notice answer different planning questions: one gives an approximate travel time to Yanase, while the other concerns access to the trails to Senbonyama. If you are planning to hike, keep an eye on both the bus connection and the latest forestry notice. This helps distinguish travel arrangements from hiking preparation.
