In Yokosuka, landscaped gardens, harbor views, and reminders of naval history come together. Verny Park combines roses with a waterfront promenade, while Mikasa Park stands out with its musical fountains and monuments. The area also includes the historic sites on Sarushima and other destinations around Yokosuka. The options range from a stroll along the harbor to cultural and historical attractions.

Gardens and Harbor Views at Verny Park

Verny Park has a waterfront promenade with views of Yokosuka Main Port, making it a pleasant place for a walk. The grounds feature French flower beds, fountains, and Western-style pavilions. The park was designed in the French garden style and completed at the end of Japan’s 2001 fiscal year. Around 1,300 roses of about 130 varieties grow there, mostly French varieties. The plantings may change with the seasons.

The busts in the park also tell the stories of people connected to its history: they depict the engineer Verny and the financial magistrate of the time, Oguri Kozukenosuke Tadamasa. The gardens, harbor promenade, and historical reminders stand side by side in one place. Visitors interested in garden design will find a different focus here than at Mikasa Park, with its monuments and naval history.

Fountains, Monuments, and Naval History

Mikasa Park’s theme is “Water, Light, and Sound.” Its features include fountains that move to music and numerous monuments, including one that stands 18 meters tall. The city reports that park renovations are ongoing; construction may affect some of these features. From the park, ships in Tokyo Bay and Sarushima can be seen behind the Mikasa.

In the wider Yokosuka area, the Japan National Tourism Organization recommends the 19th-century battleship Mikasa as a sightseeing attraction. The ship served in the Russo-Japanese War and is considered one of the world’s three great historic memorial ships. Its role also offers a way to understand maritime history beyond the view from the park.

Sarushima: Cultural Heritage Amid Greenery and Fortifications

Sarushima is designated a national historic site and is included in Japan’s Japan Heritage program. Former military facilities, including brick tunnels and gun emplacements, remain among the dense greenery. Structures from the fortress era are considered valuable historical heritage. Visitors interested in history will find preserved architectural landmarks here, while Verny Park is primarily associated with gardens and harbor views.

A Citywide Perspective

The Yokosuka Route Museum presents the entire city as a “museum” of connected attractions and experiences. It introduces more than 60 destinations across architecture, historic monuments, industrial landmarks, naval history, parks, and gardens. This overview shows how the attractions around Yokosuka cover a range of themes.

The Yokosuka Museum of Art is located directly on Tokyo Bay and is surrounded on three sides by the lush natural landscape of Kannonzaki Prefectural Park. To get there, take a Keikyu bus from Yokosuka Station or Maborikaigan Station toward Kannonzaki and get off at “La Vista Yokosuka Kannonzaki Terrace and Yokosuka Museum of Art”; the museum is then a two-minute walk away. Bus service may change, so check the route before traveling.

More Park and Harbor Experiences

Kurihama Flower Park makes use of the natural terrain for its green parkland. Its listed facilities include Adventure Land, with a Godzilla slide, and an herb garden with the Yuttari footbath. Check the availability of these facilities before your trip.

The Yokosuka Naval Port Cruise is described as a 45-minute journey through the calm waters of the Japanese and American naval bases. Ships, including submarines and supply vessels, may be visible up close; aircraft carriers can only be seen when they are in port. Operations and visibility may vary, so check the current offerings and cruise details before making plans.

Shopping and dining are also part of the wider Yokosuka area: Dobuita Street offers eye-catching Sukajan jackets with elaborate embroidery, including vintage styles and new jackets, as well as several pubs and restaurants. Individual businesses may change. The Yokosuka Navy Burger is a local gourmet brand based on a recipe prepared in the style of the Japanese Navy and is sold to visitors at shops around the naval base.
