Tarumizu combines cultural and historical insights with nature and water experiences. In historic Tarumizu Fumoto, deliberately angled street sections known as masugata remain part of the town layout. The municipality also offers a gorge, a viewpoint, and other ways to take in the landscape. If you want to decide what to focus on during your trip, you can choose between architecture and family history, outdoor activities, and views of Sakurajima from the sea.
Tarumizu Fumoto and its history
Tarumizu Fumoto was ruled by the Tarumizu-Shimazu family and was laid out around Hayashi Castle. The surviving masugata are deliberately angled street sections and part of the historic town layout. The term therefore does not simply refer to any alley, but to a distinctive form in the course of a street. For travelers interested in local history, this offers a concrete point of connection: family rule and the town’s structure are both part of the history of Tarumizu Fumoto.
One striking structure is O-Nagaya, the oldest surviving wooden building in Kagoshima Prefecture. It is considered a building of the tamon-yagura type. Its historical function is interpreted as both a guard post for samurai and an armory. This connection between architectural style and possible use offers a different historical perspective from the street layout: here, the focus is on a single building and its interpreted function, while the streets reflect the structure of the town.
Family history is also present at other named sites. The cemetery of the Tarumizu-Shimazu family was designated a National Historic Site in 2020. Shimazu Tadamasa, founder of the Tarumizu-Shimazu family, is enshrined at Otonok Shrine. Together, these places offer different perspectives on the same family history: the historic site, religious veneration, and architectural traces in Fumoto.
To help visitors explore local history, the Tarumizu District Community Center created the “Tarumizu Historical Walk” map. It contains historical information about the district and complements the specific sites with a thematic overview. If you are particularly interested in how the town layout developed, the map’s name explicitly links the historical walk to Tarumizu.
Landscape and activities in the municipality
The Takatoge Tsutsuji-ga-oka Park is located in Tarumizu at an elevation of about 550 meters. There is a viewpoint at the summit with a 360-degree panorama. Its elevation and all-round views make the park a clear contrast to the streets and buildings of historic Fumoto: here, the focus is on views of the landscape.
Another natural setting is Sarugajo Gorge, at the foot of the Takakuma Mountains. It is characterized by clear water and granite rock formations. Activities include canyoning and hikes along the gorge. If you plan to go canyoning, check the current reservation season in advance. This makes it easy to choose a nature outing to suit your interests: hikes follow the gorge, while canyoning is a separate activity in the same natural area.
Local cuisine and views from the water
The Tarumizu Hamabira roadside station combines a market selling local vegetables and specialties with a seafood restaurant. The specific offerings may change with the tenants. A local fishing method also offers insight into the area’s food culture: Tontoko fishing refers to catching shrimp in Kinko Bay at depths of 100 to 200 meters. The method describes a fishing tradition, not a public hands-on activity.
The Kamikaze–Tarumizu ferry offers another perspective on the landscape. It passes in front of Sakurajima and offers views of the volcano from the sea. If you plan to take a trip, check the schedule and fares in advance. Alongside the historical and cultural sites and nature destinations, an experience on the water is another distinct option for your trip.
