Ichikikushikino offers a range of travel interests within its municipal area: a dune beach, walking trail, Satsuma history and shochu. They range from coastal scenery and outdoor activity to museums, garden design and brewery tours.
Coast and walking trail: two nature themes
Terushima Coast is a dune beach about 3 km long at the northern end of Fukiagehama Prefectural Natural Park. The Kanmuri-dake walking trail is about 10 km long, for pedestrians only, and circles the middle slopes of the mountain. This gives you a choice between a stretch of coast and a walking loop, each offering a different landscape. The lengths refer to different things: about 3 km of beach and an approximately 10 km trail. If you want to focus on nature, you can choose between the dune beach and a walking route on the mountain slopes. This lets you choose a landscape based on the kind of experience you want, without treating the beach and trail lengths as equivalent distances.
Satsuma history and garden design
The Satsuma Students Museum displays materials and videos about the journeys and achievements of the Satsuma students. Its focus is a specific group and their travels. The Ichiki Osako Residence is in Minato-machi, in the city of Ichikikushikino, and was registered as a nationally registered tangible cultural property in 2018. Its garden is laid out in the style of a Satsuma samurai residence; large, roughly shaped rocks contrast with the plantings. These offer different cultural interests to include in your plans: the museum focuses on the journeys and achievements of the Satsuma students, while the residence offers its registration and garden design.
Shochu brewery and mine railway
At Satsuma Kinzan-gura, a tour of the shochu brewery takes you into the mine tunnels; a mine railway is part of the tour. The combination of brewery, tunnels and mine railway makes this tour a distinct attraction alongside the museum and residence. Reservations are required for the tour. Check the current visiting days, departure times and reservation conditions in advance, as these operational details may change.
Satsuma Kinzan-gura also has a ground-level shop selling shochu and other Satsuma-related products. For visitors interested in shochu and products connected with Satsuma, the shop is an additional place to shop at the site. The reservation is for the tour; the ground-level shop is a separate shopping option for shochu and other Satsuma products. This lets you plan the tour separately from checking what the shop has to offer.
