Tsukuba offers a range of experiences to suit different interests: Mt. Tsukuba is known for its summit, hiking views, and shrine, while the city area also offers botanical gardens, cycling opportunities, and science. You can choose a hotel in Tsukuba to match the activities you plan to spend time on.

Mt. Tsukuba: Summit and Shrine

Mt. Tsukuba is accessible by bus from Tsukuba Station. The 1.6-kilometer Mt. Tsukuba Cable Car takes visitors to the summit. Hiking is another option on the mountain: after a few hours of hiking, you can enjoy panoramic views from Mt. Tsukuba. The cable car ride and the views while hiking are two different ways to experience the mountain.

The historic Tsukubasan Shrine is located halfway up Mt. Tsukuba. Its deities, Tsukuba-no-ĹŤkami Izanagi and Tsukuba-no-me-no-kami Izanami, are revered for matchmaking and marital harmony. The mountain is thus connected to a religious tradition that is also reflected in a special cultural property at the shrine: it houses a sword called Yoshimune, designated an Important Cultural Property of Japan, which was donated by Shogun Iemitsu.

Gardens and Landscapes in Tsukuba City

Within the city of Tsukuba, the municipal Tsukuba Plum Grove is located halfway up Mt. Tsukuba at an elevation of about 250 meters and is a point of interest in the Tsukuba Area Geopark. Also within Tsukuba City, HĹŤkyĹŤsan lies in the northeastern part of the city. The mountain is 461 meters high and offers a 360-degree panorama. These are two different points of reference for nature lovers: the plum grove halfway up Mt. Tsukuba and HĹŤkyĹŤsan with its panoramic views.

Within the city of Tsukuba, the Tsukuba Botanical Garden offers another way to learn about plants. The garden covers 14 hectares and has more than 7,000 different wild plant species, about 3,000 of which are displayed year-round outdoors and in greenhouses. The garden's outdoor areas are divided into nine zones that recreate vegetation types characteristic of Japan. Four greenhouse areas recreate tropical and semi-arid regions. The garden can therefore be understood not only by its number of plants but also by the contrast between Japanese vegetation types and recreated regions.

Cycling Routes, Recreation, and Science

Within the city of Tsukuba, bicycle rentals are available at Tsukuba Station, Tsukubasan-guchi, and Cycle Park Tsukuba. The national Tsukuba-Kasumigaura Ring Ring Road cycling route runs through the city of Tsukuba, right beside the rental location at Tsukubasan-guchi. Route conditions and operating information may change, so check them before planning your trip. Within the city of Tsukuba, Forest Adventure Tsukuba offers a 100-meter-long zipline that runs above a grove of about 1,000 plum trees. The courses available may change, so it is worth checking the current offering in advance.

The Tsukuba Science Tour Bus departs from bus stop 8 at the Tsukuba Center Bus Terminal, next to Tsukuba Station. The bus connects six research and educational institutions within the city of Tsukuba; it runs on Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays, except during the New Year holidays. Check the latest departure times and operating days before traveling, as this information may change. Within the city of Tsukuba, the Space Dome at the JAXA Tsukuba Space Center offers close-up views of scale-model satellites, an actual rocket engine, and a scale model of Japan's Kibo Experiment Module. Exhibits may change, so if there are specific exhibits you want to see, check what is currently on display in advance.

Whether you choose Tsukuba for its hiking views and shrine or for the city's botanical, cycling, and scientific attractions, you can tailor your accommodation search to the kind of stay you have planned.
