Discover Wakkanai through a range of interests: coastal views, marine life, architectural history, poetry monuments and park golf each offer a different focus. The specific features of each place help distinguish these interests from one another.

Coastal Views of Islands and Sakhalin

Noshappu Cape is the westernmost point of Wakkanai City and juts out into the Soya Strait. From there, you can see the islands of Rishiri and Rebun; the cape is also known for its sunsets. At Cape Soya in Wakkanai, Sakhalin, more than 40 kilometers away, is visible on a clear day. The two coastal points therefore offer different highlights: Rishiri, Rebun and sunsets at Noshappu, and Sakhalin on a clear day at Soya.

Marine Life at the Noshappu Cold Current Aquarium

The Noshappu Cold Current Aquarium keeps and displays around 1,300 specimens from 120 mostly northern species. Approximate population figures may change over time. A 90-ton circular-flow tank features Ito, rockfish, flounder, hokke and wolffish. This gives you two distinct highlights: the breadth of the collection and the groups of fish in a single large tank. If you are interested in marine life, the aquarium offers both an overview of its species and a particularly large tank with named inhabitants.

Harbor Structure and Lighthouse

Construction of the Wakkanai Port North Breakwater Dome began in 1931 and was completed in 1936. The Wakkanai Lighthouse stands at Noshappu Cape: at 42.7 meters, it is the second-tallest lighthouse in Japan. The harbor structure's construction period and the lighthouse's height and ranking offer two different points of reference for understanding Wakkanai through its structures.

Views from Wakkanai Park

The 80-meter-tall Centennial Tower stands in Wakkanai Park. The Northern Memorial Museum is housed on its lower floors. On a clear day, the glass-walled observation hall of the Northern Memorial Museum and Centennial Tower, located 70 meters above ground, offers views of the Wakkanai urban area, Rishiri, Rebun and Sakhalin. Along with views of the city, you can take in a broad panorama of the islands and Sakhalin; visibility conditions are explicitly part of the experience.

Poetry Along a Walking Path

The Tanka no Michi walking path runs from Hokumon Shrine to Hyosetsu-no-Mon. Memorial stones bearing poems stand along the route. The literary theme accompanies the path rather than being limited to a single destination. This offers a different way to explore from visiting a viewpoint or a single structure: here, the poetry stones give the route its cultural character.

Park Golf with Four Courses

At Hokkaido Prefectural Soya Fureai Park, a course recognized by the Japan Park Golf Association offers 36 holes across four courses. Clubs are available to borrow. The course size and club rental make park golf a clearly defined activity in Wakkanai. Alongside landscape and cultural attractions, it is also a specific sporting option if you want to shape your stay around different interests.
