Shintoku offers several distinct reasons to visit: cherry blossoms on Shintoku Shrine Mountain, winter sports at Shintoku Mountain Ski Area, and railway heritage along the Karikachi Poppo Trail. Buckwheat fields along National Route 38 add to the landscape. When choosing accommodation, it is worth first deciding on your main reason for visiting and your travel dates: cherry blossom season has a usual period, winter sports are subject to seasonal conditions, and the railway trail has its own route.

Cherry Blossoms on Shintoku Shrine Mountain

About 2,300 Ezo-Yamazakura cherry trees grow across Shintoku Shrine Mountain. They usually bloom in early May. If cherry blossoms are the reason for your trip, you can use this usual period as a guide; it does not refer to one fixed date. The approximate number of trees and their distribution across the mountain give your visit a clear scenic focal point.

A different landscape can be seen along National Route 38. Between Karikachi Pass and the center of Shintoku, buckwheat fields stretch for about 1.5 kilometers through an area known as Soba Road. This section of road is a distinct point of interest in the local landscape and should not be confused with the Karikachi Poppo Trail.

The Karikachi Poppo Trail and Railway Heritage

The Karikachi Poppo Trail was established on the route of the former Karikachi National Railway Line, which was closed in 1966. Today, the trail is used for walking, cycling, and horseback riding. Its approximately ten-kilometer route runs from the SL Plaza below Shintoku Mountain Ski Area to the former Niinai Station. Along the trail, you can see masonry arch bridges and bridge piers as railway heritage. The trail description thus covers both its range of uses and the structural remnants of the former railway.

Winter Sports at Shintoku Mountain

Shintoku Mountain Ski Area is a family ski area for beginners through advanced skiers. It is a seven-minute walk from JR Shintoku Station to the ski area. This gives you a specific point of reference when traveling by train. Operating details and conditions change by season; check them before your visit.

The SAJ-accredited Shintoku Mountain Ski School, operated by the NPO Sahoro Sports Club, also offers ski and snowboard programs for children, teenagers, and adults. Program availability may vary by season. The ski area and the school address different questions: the ski area is described as suitable for beginners through advanced skiers, while the school’s offerings are listed by activity and age group. Check whether the programs you want are available during your travel dates.

Choosing Your Travel Dates and Accommodation

The information points to different priorities for planning your trip: early May is the usual cherry blossom period, while ski area operating conditions and program availability depend on the season. The Karikachi Poppo Trail, in turn, combines an approximately ten-kilometer route with several stated uses and visible railway remnants. First decide which of these priorities matters most to you, then look for hotels in Shintoku for your stay.
