At the Nanporo Nature Observation Education Forest, the focus is on established walking trails, exploring nature and collecting insects. At Mie Lake, visitors can fish and picnic; a public kart track and park golf add to the sporting options. You can plan your time in Nanporo around your preferred focus: forest, lake or active leisure.
Forest and Water
The Nanporo Nature Observation Education Forest covers 5.59 hectares of Nanporo’s only national forest. It lies within a woodland designated as a windbreak forest. The established trails are used for exploring nature, and insects are collected there too. The forest can therefore be planned as a place to experience nature in two different ways: take a walk along the trails or focus specifically on insects. If nature observation is on your wish list, this combination offers a concrete reason to include the forest as a destination in its own right.
Mie Lake is popular with families for fishing and picnicking; the lake is home to particularly large crucian carp. There are also bungalows, a water play area and a family campground by the lake. Alongside fishing and picnicking, these facilities offer options for spending time and staying overnight. The crucian carp give fishing at this lake a distinctive local connection.
Sports and Activity
Nanporo Riverside Kartland is a public kart track recognised by JAF. It is 727 metres long and 8 metres wide, with the longest straight measuring 120 metres. You can drive your own kart or rent one there. The track can therefore be included in your leisure plans whether you bring your own kart or rent one.
Nanporo Riverside Park is a sports park developed in the floodplain of the Yūbari River. Activities include racing karts, football, park golf and camping, along with other leisure and recreation options by the water. Some facilities operate seasonally. If you choose a specific activity, bear in mind that not all facilities are open year-round.
The park golf course at Nanporo Central Park has 18 holes across two courses, each with nine holes. The course has numerous changes in elevation, and its opening dates are seasonal. Its course layout and terrain give park golf a different character from the kart track: here, the focus is on multiple holes and changing elevations.
Camping, Views and Local Products
Mie Green Park Campground borders Nanporo Riverside Park. Camping there can be combined with sports such as baseball and football. In clear weather, the campground offers views of the Tokachi Mountains to the east, Mount Teine to the west, Mount Eniwa and Mount Tarumae to the south, and the mountains of Shokanbetsu to the north. These directions make the views a tangible part of a stay at the campground; mountain views depend on clear weather.
The shop at Nanporo Onsen sells local products, including cabbage, Chinese cabbage and daikon kimchi, as well as sanshōzuke and Nanban miso. For those interested in regional products, it offers a specific place to shop, with a selection ranging from kimchi made with different vegetables to the seasonings also listed here.
The locations offer distinct focuses: the forest is about trails and exploring nature, Mie Lake is for fishing and picnicking, while the kart track and park golf offer sporting activities. At Mie Green Park Campground, these options are complemented by its connection to Riverside Park and views in clear weather. You can choose what to do in Nanporo based on the activities that matter most during your stay.
