Maebashi combines expansive parkland with traces of its silk history and a diverse cultural scene. This offers several themes to consider when planning a trip: relaxing in Shikishima Park, exploring literature and art along the Hirose River, or learning about the region’s cultural history.
Shikishima Park: Green space with a clear division
Shikishima Park lies between the Tone and Hirose rivers and covers 37.6 hectares. Of this, 17.8 hectares are sports facilities managed by the prefecture, while 19.8 hectares make up the recreational area managed by the city. The park is also home to around 2,700 pine trees. This division shows how the sports facilities and recreational area form distinct parts of the park, while the pine forest adds its own green accent to the grounds.
The silk industry memorial museum is located on the grounds of the rose garden 敷島公園門倉テクノばら園. It recalls Maebashi’s history as the “City of Silk” and adds a cultural and historical dimension to the park. In Maebashi, nature and recreation sit alongside the history of an industry that helped shape the city.
Poetry and art along the Hirose River
A walking path runs along the Hirose River through the green area on its banks. There is also a “Poetry Path” featuring memorial stones for local poets, including 萩原朔太郎 (Hagiwara Sakutarō). Other stones bear excerpts from works that have received the 萩原朔太郎賞. The path thus combines a riverside walk with tangible reminders of local literary history.
The Hirose River area is also home to the Maebashi Zanei Monument and the Kōsui Weir. Both recall Maebashi’s history as a city shaped by the silk industry. The artwork “Sun Bell” by 岡本太郎 (Taro Okamoto) is another part of the area’s cultural history: it was relocated to the banks of the Hirose in central Maebashi in 2018.
Museums and cultural offerings
The Maebashi Literature Museum and the Hirose River Museum of Art are located in the Hirose River area. The Literature Museum displays materials related to local poets. Its materials on 萩原朔太郎, including manuscripts, are considered outstanding nationwide in both quality and scope. Check the current visiting conditions before your visit.
The Hagiwara Sakutaro Memorial Museum preserves a relocated and reconstructed part of 萩原朔太郎’s childhood home. He developed photographs in the memorial museum’s storehouse. These details give literary history a personal dimension: alongside the preserved parts of the building, the storehouse’s former use also tells a story about his life.
臨江閣 is also designated an Important Cultural Property of Japan. Its uses include sightseeing, tea gatherings, exhibitions, the Ryūō title match in shogi, rakugo performances, concerts, and receptions. Keep the visiting period in mind: 臨江閣 will be closed for an extended period from June 2026 through the end of March 2027.
Arts Maebashi offers exhibitions, events, workshops, a variety of performances, and educational programs. Its offerings also include access to an art-focused library, ROBSON COFFEE, and the museum shop amenbo. As events and operating arrangements may change, check the latest information before your visit.
A local taste from Gunma
焼きまんじゅう is one of Gunma Prefecture’s regional specialties: fluffy white dough buns are threaded onto skewers, brushed with a rich, sweet miso sauce, and grilled until fragrant. Traditionally, they are eaten hot. This dish adds a regional taste to Maebashi’s cultural and landscape themes, with a connection that reaches beyond the city itself.
Which themes suit your stay?
When deciding whether Maebashi is right for your trip, you can weigh its different themes against one another: Shikishima Park offers green spaces and relaxation, while the Poetry Path, museums, and artworks invite literary and cultural exploration. The silk history provides a common thread connecting several of these places. This lets you shape your stay around your own interests without combining every theme into a fixed itinerary.
