Kakamigahara offers different ways to experience culture, nature, and leisure: aviation technology, historic townscapes, trails through the landscape, and activities on the water each have their own focus. When planning your trip, it is worth treating these offerings as separate options rather than as a single route. This lets you weigh your cultural interests, preferred level of activity, and seasonal nature-watching separately.
Aviation History and Sites from the Edo Period
In the aviation section of the Gifu-Kakamigahara Air and Space Museum, the first floor includes the STOL experimental aircraft “Asuka” and the T-2 trainer, among other exhibits. This section is part of the permanent exhibition and presents the history of the development of human aviation technology. It offers a different focus from the historic townscapes you can find in Kakamigahara.
In Unuma-juku, waterways have been restored and important buildings in the townscape have been preserved or renovated. This brings the atmosphere of an Edo-period post station to life. The Wakihonjin of NakasendĹŤ Unuma-juku was reconstructed based on historic house plans, the exterior and interior design, and details of a surviving wakihonjin. The reconstruction opened to the public in May 2010.
Tokuyama Jinya Park also recreates an Edo-period jinya landscape. It is based on the plan “Saraki Jinya Ezu” and an archaeological excavation conducted in 2000. Those interested in historic sites and their reconstruction will find a different perspective here than at the aviation museum: the focus is on the recreated jinya landscape rather than the development of aviation technology.
Hiking Trails and Viewpoints
“Kakamigahara Alps” is the common name for the mountains on the northern edge of the Kakamigahara Plateau. There are several routes for beginners and experienced hikers, and viewpoints along the trails offer wide-ranging views over the landscape. The Kenzoku Trail has a specific time estimate: it leads from the Nature Experience Center to the summit of Mount Kanayama, on the border with Seki City, in about 40 minutes. Some sections are steep. There is a viewpoint at the summit, from which Ise Bay may be visible in clear weather.
The 16.8-kilometer “Kakamigahara Course” section of the Tōkai Nature Trail is on a different scale. Its distance should not be equated with the approximate hiking time for the Kenzoku Trail. Before setting out, check current trail conditions and signage, as both may change. This will help you decide whether a short route with a defined hiking time or a longer trail section better suits your plans.
Water, Forests, and Seasonal Nature
Rare plants, as well as many birds, insects, and small animals, are found in Kagamino Nature Heritage Forest, where the natural environment is preserved. On summer evenings in early summer, fireflies fly along the upper reaches of the Dai-Anji River. A biotope called Dai-Anji River Firefly Village has been established in areas where fireflies are abundant. These nature-watching opportunities differ in both habitat and season: one is a forest with diverse flora and fauna, the other, fireflies in the evening in early summer.
Ogase Pond has a circumference of about two kilometers. A shrine dedicated to Hachidai Ryūō, the pond’s guardian deity, stands on an island in the pond. Cherry trees line both banks of the Shin-Sakai River, which flows through Kakamigahara City, and the area is known for its cherry blossoms. Another seasonal highlight is a tree-lined path about 300 meters long: around 60 meters are lined with metasequoias and around 240 meters with ginkgo trees. Their autumn colors are usually visible from late November to early December.
Leisure and Activities on the Water
Kakamigahara Outdoor Field is considered a hub for outdoor recreation and sports in a setting shaped by water and greenery, and is used by people of various ages. For water sports and leisure, Kakamigahara City Pool has a range of pools: the heated indoor area includes a 25-meter swimming pool, as well as pools for children and toddlers. Outdoors, facilities include a water slide, a lazy river, and other recreational amenities. The complex also has a competition-standard 50-meter pool with seating for 638 spectators. If you are planning a visit, check the current operating information.
Kakamigahara Riverside 21 is a putting golf course with natural grass. The city describes it as “outstanding in the Tōkai region.” River Environment Paradise is also described as a destination with a range of nature and leisure activities that can keep families occupied for a whole day. Its attractions include the Aqua Toto Gifu aquarium, the Nature Discovery Center, and the prefectural Oasis Park.
During cormorant fishing on the Kiso River, visitors can watch cormorant fishing boats lit by torches against the backdrop of Inuyama Castle at night. The daytime demonstration makes it easy to follow the movements of the cormorants and the cormorant fishers, and can be combined with a meal. Check the operating dates for the relevant year before making plans. This helps you choose between the evening boat scene and the daytime demonstration based on the dates actually available.
