Kitashiobara offers several ways to explore history and scenery: the 柏木城跡 ruins recall the military role of a mountain castle, 神楽岩 is a striking geological formation, and the 川前棚田 offers opportunities to take part in agricultural activities. There is also a shrine with a named flight of steps and historical records about a temple. Depending on your interests, you can focus on local history, geology, or taking part in agricultural work.

History of the mountain castle 柏木城跡

柏木城跡 is a mountain castle dating from the late Sengoku period. The Ashina clan of Aizu used it as a stronghold to defend against Date Masamune's invasion from Yonezawa. The site thus represents a specific military function: its history connects the area with figures from Aizu and Yonezawa. If you are interested in the region's history, the castle's role offers a clear point of reference.

To reach the remains of the main area, the village recommends taking the adjacent castle trail from the car park at 北塩原村活性化センター. 柏木城跡 is private property; please behave appropriately when visiting. The remains may not be visible from late November to early April because of snow. If you would like to visit, take this period into account when choosing your visit date.

River and rock in 大塩

The 大塩川 rises on 高曽根山 and flows through the 大塩 and 北山 districts. The largest area of farmland in 北塩原村 lies within this river's catchment. The river's course provides a geographical framework for the landscape, while the farmland also illustrates the importance of the catchment area at the village level.

神楽岩, a striking rock formation in the 大塩エリア, offers a different perspective. It is made of dacite around 14 million years old. While the river reveals its source and course through two districts, 神楽岩 draws attention to the type and approximate age of the rock. For those interested in the landscape, these offer two distinct subjects: a river's course and the geology of a specific formation.

Shrine and historical records

温泉神社 is located in the center of the 大塩エリア, near the source of 大塩裏磐梯温泉. The shrine stands on a rise reached by climbing more than 180 steps. The stairs are therefore a practical consideration when planning a visit; no walking time is given for the climb.

大塩虚空蔵堂 is located in 大塩字虚空蔵. Details of its circumstances at the time are recorded in 新編会津風土記, a chronicle compiled during the Edo period. These historical records thus add a different perspective on local history to the military history of 柏木城跡. If you are interested in the history passed down through the years, both the role of a mountain castle and the records about a temple offer different points of reference.

Take part at 川前棚田

The 川前棚田 stewardship program includes four agricultural activities per year. Participants grow rice and maintain the terraces together with あいばせ and local residents. Anyone can take part in these agricultural activities. The program is therefore also suited to travelers who want to do more than simply admire the landscape and would like to help work on the terraces.

If you would like to plan your trip around taking part, check the latest event information in advance. Program details and participation requirements may change; the four annual activities describe the scope of the stewardship program, not the availability of a particular activity during your stay.
