Yanagawa can be discovered through its waterways, a spring tradition, and historic buildings. The famous Kawakudari boat ride travels through the canals; Sagemon Meguri brings together decorated houses and the Hina-sama Water Parade. The Mihashira Shrine and the Suikyo Yanagawa landscape add two more distinct themes. This lets you decide whether to focus your stay on the canal ride, the spring tradition, or architectural and landscape history.
Take a Kawakudari ride through the canals
The famous Kawakudari boat ride takes you through the city’s canals in Donko boats. It covers about four kilometers and takes approximately one hour. During the ride, you’ll hear commentary from the boatman and boat songs. The experience combines a journey on the water with spoken explanations and music. For planning your day, you can set aside approximately one hour for the ride.
In winter, Kawakudari also uses boats fitted with a charcoal brazier as a kotatsu. If you’d like to experience this seasonal version, check in advance whether it’s offered on your travel dates.
Sagemon Meguri: Houses and a Water Parade
Sagemon Meguri is a spring tradition in Yanagawa. Visitors walk along houses decorated with hanging ornaments and take a look at them. The stroll draws attention to the houses and their decorations, while Kawakudari focuses on traveling through the canals.
The Hina-sama Water Parade is also part of Sagemon Meguri. Children in festive clothing travel in boats. The parade adds an event on the water to the walk along the decorated houses. Knowing that it’s a spring tradition can help you choose when to travel; check the specific event dates separately for your travel plans.
Architectural History and Canal Landscape
The Mihashira Shrine preserves main buildings from the Bunsei period. It lies just outside Yanagawa’s former castle town, across a moat. The shrine can therefore be understood both through the period in which its main buildings were constructed and through its historic location in relation to the former town.
Namikura is part of Suikyo Yanagawa, a nationally designated scenic site connected with Yanagawa’s canal landscape. Here, the focus is on the designated landscape and its connection to the canals, while the Mihashira Shrine represents historic buildings and their period. Visitors who want to consider Yanagawa’s landscape as well as its architectural history will find a different way to explore it here.
Getting There and Planning Your Time
Nishitetsu Yanagawa Station can be reached from Nishitetsu Fukuoka (Tenjin) Station by Limited Express train in about 50 minutes. The travel time is approximate; as schedules can change, check the connection for your travel date. The train journey from Nishitetsu Fukuoka (Tenjin) and the approximately one-hour Kawakudari ride are separate parts of your plans: getting there and an activity in Yanagawa. If you plan to do both, set aside separate blocks of time for them. This makes it easier to distinguish your arrival time from the duration of the boat ride.
