The municipality and its surrounding area bring together a wide variety of attractions: parks, a fossil-rich outcrop, an old Yamazakura cherry tree, a natural forest, markets selling directly to customers and a former ferry route. When planning, it is useful to keep these highlights distinct: cherry blossoms are seasonal and fleeting, the forest offers several ways to observe nature, while the markets and local history appeal to different interests.

Nature, Parks and Geology

Makinohara Park has three tennis courts, a health trail, a playground, restrooms and play equipment. It also features a 41-meter-high artificial hill. The park therefore brings together opportunities for exercise, places to play and practical facilities. Park facilities can change over time, so if particular amenities are important for your visit, check the latest information in advance.

At the Kinoshita Shell Bed outcrop in Kinoshita Manyo Park, you can see a formation 4.3 meters high and 45 meters long, densely packed with shell fossils. Collecting fossils is prohibited at the designated outcrop. Futago Park on the Inzai side offers another connection to fossils: it has figures of an adult and juvenile Naumann’s elephants, which are associated with fossil finds in the nearby area. The subject of fossils is thus presented both in a visible formation and in figures connected to nearby finds.

Yoshitaka no ĹŚzakura is a Yamazakura cherry tree estimated to be more than 400 years old. The tree is designated a municipal natural monument. It usually blooms about a week later than Somei-Yoshino cherry trees, and peak bloom lasts about two to three days. Exact blooming dates vary from year to year. If you want to plan your trip around its blossoms, check the actual timing for that season.

Kusafuka no Mori, a natural forest, is home to birds, insects, and rare plants and animals. Visitors can go for walks, observe nature and enjoy forest bathing there. Comparing it with the Yamazakura helps put the seasons in perspective: the tree’s timing depends on when it blooms and how long the blossoms last, while the forest offers various ways to observe nature.

Markets and Local History

At Kinoshita Market, local producers sell fresh vegetables, seasonal fruit and colorful flowers directly from small trucks. A market in Kioroshi also sells fresh vegetables and seasonal fruit directly from small trucks. Both markets sell vegetables and fruit directly, while Kinoshita Market adds flowers to its selection. If you are planning to visit the Kioroshi market, check the latest event notice beforehand.

Local history offers another perspective: the predecessor of Kinoshita Wharf was a ferry crossing that connected Kinoshita with Fudakawa, in what is now Tone Town in Ibaraki Prefecture. Alongside nature and regional produce, this offers a glimpse of a historic transportation link.
