Yurihonjō combines nature and cultural experiences with a close look at 鳥海山. The name refers to both the mountain and the historic site: the latter includes, within 由利本荘市, 森子大物忌神社境内と滝沢口登拝道 and 木境大物忌神社境内と道者道. Mountain nature and precisely named cultural heritage sites thus form two distinct focal points for planning a trip.
Mountain Nature and Wetlands
鳥海山 is one of Japan’s 100 famous mountains. It is known for its beech forests, alpine plants, and rare wetlands and their flora and fauna. About 250,000 hikers and tourists visit each year.
Among the plants that grow in 桑ノ木台湿原 are ミズバショウ and ワタスゲ, as well as many other northern plants. Rare species listed in the Red Lists of Japan’s Ministry of the Environment or Akita Prefecture are also found there. 竜ケ原湿原, near 祓川ヒュッテ, lies in the wider Yurihonjō area. At 竜ケ原湿原, which is near 祓川ヒュッテ, a boardwalk leads to a pond fed by a cold spring; numerous alpine plants, including rare species, can be seen in the surrounding area. The two marshes offer different highlights: one is characterized by named plants and Red List species, while the other features a boardwalk, a spring-fed pond, and alpine plants.
The grounds of 森子大物忌神社 also have a distinctive layout: about 300 steep stone steps lead uphill from the first torii gate to the shrine.
Cultural Heritage, Wood and Craftsmanship
鳥海山 木のおもちゃ館 preserves the former 旧鮎川小学校 in its original form; the building is registered as a national tangible cultural property. Founded in July 2018, the museum has toys and large play equipment made from locally produced wood. It is designed as a center for wood-based education and intergenerational exchange. Its defining features thus include both the preserved school building and the combination of wood and learning.
Another hands-on craft experience is ぜんまい織り: the fluff of the royal fern is woven into fabric made from silk and wool yarn; for example, coasters can be made. A reservation is required at least one week in advance. The museum and weaving offer different focuses: one centers on school architecture, wooden toys and wood-based education, while the other involves a specific textile-making process.
Waterfall, Trekking and Seasonal Camping
A tourism listing dated March 11, 2020, describes 法体園地キャンプ場 as a free campground with a view of the waterfall, cooking facilities and toilets. You can also play in the river there. The listing gives the season as early May through late October. Check whether it is operating before your trip.
玉田渓谷 lies above 法体の滝 and is a trekking course with many sights, including natural potholes. The campground and trekking course offer different outdoor activities: the campground is described as offering camping, waterfall views and river play, while the potholes are among the sights noted in the valley.
Local Experiences and Getting Around
発酵小路 田屋 is the direct-sales shop of the sake brewery 齋彌酒造店, known for 雪の茅舎. A tourism listing dated March 7, 2020, describes a traditional house that was converted into a café and shop. It offers 雪の茅舎, amazake, 奈良漬 made with sake lees, and ice cream and cakes made with sake lees. Since these product details come from that listing, check what is currently available before visiting.
A tourism listing also dated 2020 describes a きりたんぽづくり experience at ハーブワールドAKITA: きりたんぽ is made from coarsely mashed Akita rice, placed on a skewer made of Akita cedar and browned. It is then cooked with wild greens, vegetables and chicken to make きりたんぽ鍋. Weaving and preparing this rice dish thus offer two different insights into local activities and food culture.
Another useful reference point for getting around the area is 由利高原鉄道 鳥海山ろく線: it connects 羽後本荘駅 and 矢島駅, is 23.0 kilometers long and has twelve stations. The line was formerly operated as 国鉄矢島線. Its endpoints, route length and number of stations give an overview of the connection, while its former name also places it in its historical context.
