In Toyohashi, attractions range from the former Tōkaidō post station of Futagawa-juku to the coast, wetlands and mountains. Parks and museums add regional history and nature to the mix. If you’re looking for a hotel in Toyohashi, you can first consider whether historic sites, landscapes or a festival tied to a set date should shape your stay.
Futagawa-juku and the History of the Post Station
Futagawa-juku was the 33rd post station on the Tōkaidō, established during the Edo period. Visitors can see a honjin, the Seimeiya inn and the Komaya merchant house. The city describes Futagawa-juku as the only post station in Japan where these three establishments can be visited. Check the operator’s current access information before visiting.
Futagawa-juku Honjin is one of only two surviving honjin on the former TĹŤkaidĹŤ. The Baba family building served as a honjin from 1807 to 1870 and retains its appearance from that period. Komaya is the surviving residence and business premises of the Tamura family. In the former Futagawa-juku, the family traded in grain and ran a pawnbroking business; its members also held positions such as head merchant and village head. Together, the buildings show different aspects of the former post station. Futagawa-juku preserves traces of its past in several places, setting it apart from Yoshida-juku in central Toyohashi.
Parks, a Castle and Regional Collections
The 21.6-hectare Toyohashi Park includes the Yoshida Castle ruins, an art museum and the Sannomaru Hall. The entire park and the adjacent city hall grounds are located on the former castle site. Yoshida Castle originated as Imabashi Castle, built in 1505, and was later renamed. A reconstructed iron tower stands on the bank of the Toyo River in the park.
The Toyohashi City Museum of Art and History opened in Toyohashi Park on June 1, 1979. It mainly exhibits regional art, as well as historical, archaeological and ethnographic materials. The park therefore brings together traces of the former castle grounds and attractions focusing on the region’s art and history.
A public facility in Nohnoi Park combines a zoo, botanical garden, amusement park and natural history museum. The museum explores biological evolution and the natural world of the region through specimens, quizzes and games. Another popular experience is watching monkeys at close range, at eye level, and seeing their characteristic behavior. As offerings may change, check the latest information before visiting, especially if you’re coming to see the monkeys.
Coastal Views, a Mountain and Wetlands
The Ikobe Coast is part of the Omotehama coastline on the Enshū-nada Sea. This coastline stretches from Lake Hamana to Cape Irago on the Atsumi Peninsula. On a clear day, the view from the coast extends to the Hamana Bridge and toward Tahara. Sandy beaches, sea cliffs and coastal forest define the landscape typical of Omotehama; the Ikobe Coast is also a valuable nesting site for loggerhead sea turtles.
Ishimaki Mountain has a developed nature trail. From the summit, you can enjoy a 360-degree panorama; in favorable weather, Mount Fuji is also visible. Ashige Wetland offers a different kind of landscape: water flows there year-round, and many rare plants, as well as northern and southern species, grow there. Wetland and dryland plants can be observed together. Local species include Mikawa-baikeisĹŤ and Shiratama-hoshikusa.
Festival Calendar and Local Specialty
Futagawa Hachiman Shrine holds an annual festival on the Saturday and Sunday of the second week of October. It features a Kagura procession, festival floats and children’s mikoshi parading through the neighborhood. If you’d like to plan your trip around the festival, confirm the date for the year of your visit using the latest program.
Toyohashi Curry Udon is a local specialty of the city. Only restaurants in Toyohashi that belong to both the Toyohashi Noodle Association and Team Kare, which is made up of participating businesses, may sell it. These membership requirements can help you identify eligible restaurants when looking for the specialty.
