Port Antonio offers two distinct ways to plan your trip: the settlement and architectural history of Titchfield Peninsula, and the harbour and activities on the water. If you want to choose between culture and activity, it helps to consider these separately. On the peninsula, the focus is on settlement, architecture and heritage status; at the harbour, there are diving tours, while nearby Boston Beach is a place for surfing and bodyboarding. This makes it possible to decide in advance whether your trip should focus more on cultural history, an underwater tour or activities at Boston Beach.

Titchfield Peninsula: Settlement and Architecture

Titchfield Peninsula is considered the oldest settlement in Port Antonio and was the first place settled by the English. Its buildings showcase five architectural styles: Jamaican Georgian architecture, Victorian New England, Cape Cod Victorian, Jamaican vernacular architecture and Victorian Gingerbread. These names explicitly combine Jamaican stylistic influences with terms such as Victorian New England and Cape Cod Victorian. What matters for the architectural classification is precisely this coexistence: the peninsula does not represent a single, uniform building style, but several named traditions. On 16 April 1998, Titchfield Peninsula was designated a protected National Heritage site. This designation adds a precisely dated heritage status to its settlement and architectural history.

Fort History and Folly House

Fort George adds another historical connection. The idea for the fort arose in 1728–1729 in response to the possibility of a Spanish invasion; in 1728, Christian Lilly was commissioned to build it. The two details mark different aspects of its origins: the possible invasion as the background to the idea, and Lilly’s commission as the specific building contract. This places the fort’s history alongside the history of settlement and architecture.

Another architectural landmark is Folly House. It was built on the eastern headland of Port Antonio Harbour and offers expansive sea views. Unlike the range of architectural styles on Titchfield Peninsula, the focus here is on a single house, its location by the harbour and its sea view. This distinction offers a separate perspective on the destination’s architectural heritage.

Harbour and Activities on the Water

Lady G’Diver offers diving tours beneath the surface of Port Antonio Harbour. If you plan to take one of these tours, check current availability with the operator before your trip. Nearby Port Antonio is Boston Beach, a place for surfing and bodyboarding. The options are clearly distinct: the diving tour takes you beneath the harbour’s surface, while surfing and bodyboarding are associated with Boston Beach.

Errol Flynn Marina is also an important maritime landmark. It is the main berthing point for ships calling at Port Antonio Harbour. Thus, in addition to activities on and under the water, the harbour also serves vessels calling there.
