The Sile flows through the streets of Treviso; the Isola della Pescheria was created in the Cagnan River to host the fish market. These two connections with water tell the city’s story in different ways: one shapes its relationship with the river, while the other links a place to its original purpose. The city’s museums also offer different perspectives on Treviso’s artistic and cultural history.
Art and history in Treviso
One particularly layered place is the Museo Santa Caterina. Its complex was built from 1346 onwards on the remains of the destroyed palace of Treviso’s Da Camino lords—as a monastery of the Servite Order, with a church dedicated to Saint Catherine of Alexandria. The church features 14th- and 15th-century frescoes, including Tomaso da Modena’s cycle of Saint Ursula. The archaeological section and gallery extend the journey to medieval, Renaissance and modern art.
The Museo Luigi Bailo focuses on a different period: it is dedicated to artistic works from the 19th and 20th centuries and houses more than 150 works by Arturo Martini. Taken together, the two museums offer different ways into art: Santa Caterina spans archaeology through to modern art, while the Bailo explicitly focuses on the 19th and 20th centuries. A Titian altarpiece depicting the Annunciation is another of Treviso’s artistic highlights.
The Museo Etnografico Provinciale “Case Piavone” offers another perspective. It is housed in a rural architectural complex whose origins date back to the late 17th century. Temporary exhibitions and events explore folk traditions; the individual programmes vary. Those interested in these traditions will find a different thematic perspective here than in the art-focused museums.
Discover the river landscape and nature
The Parco della Storga covers 67 hectares and extends across the municipalities of Treviso and Carbonera. One of its distinctive features is its spring areas, where groundwater emerges at the surface and forms unique ecological systems. This offers a clear contrast with the city’s art collections: here, water and the habitats it creates take centre stage.
There are also different ways to experience the Sile. The cycle path along the river from Treviso to Casale sul Sile brings together art, history and nature. A different focus is found at the Burci ship graveyard, on the route along the Sile: boardwalks lead between the wrecks, surrounded by diverse natural habitats. The cycle route explicitly combines several themes, while the Burci ship graveyard draws attention to the wrecks and their surroundings.
A connection to the Parco Naturale Regionale del Fiume Sile is listed from Treviso’s main railway station: take bus no. 5 towards S. Cristina and Quinto di Treviso and get off at the S. Maria del Sile stop. Check the route details before travelling. Local food culture can also be part of your discoveries: Radicchio Rosso di Treviso IGP is grown in the countryside around Treviso and features on a culinary route through the region. This lets you choose your focus among art, nature and local food culture without reducing Treviso’s different facets to a single experience.
