Monsummano Terme can be explored through a wide range of different highlights: trails lead through the landscape and wetlands or up to Monsummano Alto; churches, a villa and museums offer historical and cultural points of interest, while Grotta Giusti combines underground formations with a connection to Dante. When planning your trip, it is worth considering these themes separately and deciding what to focus on based on what interests you most.

Two trails, different landscapes

The Anello dell’Isola, also known as the Anello del Padule di Monsummano Terme, is a nature and history trail through the landscape of Monsummano Terme and the Padule di Fucecchio wetlands. Before your trip, check the trail conditions and information about guided activities.

The Passeggiata sul colle di Monsummano starts on Via Maneto near the town hall and follows CAI Trail 832 through woods and olive groves. It leads to Monsummano Alto, where views extend across the plain, the Montalbano ridge and the town of Montevettolini. You can choose between them based on the kind of landscape you want to experience: the Anello passes through the wetlands, while the Passeggiata focuses on the route through woods and olive groves and the views from Monsummano Alto.

Churches from the Middle Ages to the early modern period

The Basilica of Madonna della Fontenuova was founded in 1602 at the instigation of Grand Duke Ferdinando I de’ Medici and is the historic and urban centre of Monsummano Terme. In Monsummano Alto, the Church of San Nicolao is the best-preserved building in the town; its origins date back to the 11th century. These dates mark different historical reference points: San Nicolao dates back to the Middle Ages, while the basilica was founded many centuries later.

Villa Renatico Martini was built in 1887 for Ferdinando Martini, a journalist and statesman from Monsummano. This links a specific construction date with the biography of someone who came from the town. The villa’s park and museum are accessible to visitors with limited mobility; check the accessibility arrangements again before your visit.

Museums and changing art exhibitions

The Museo della Città e del Territorio is recognised as a museum of regional importance. It received a special mention in the European Museum Forum’s EMYA awards in 2001. The Mac,n organises various kinds of cultural events and temporary art exhibitions. The two institutions therefore offer different cultural points of interest: institutional recognition on the one hand, and a programme of events and changing exhibitions on the other.

Since art exhibitions are temporary, it is a good idea to check the programme for your intended travel dates.

Grotta Giusti and its underground chambers

Grotta Giusti extends for more than 200 metres underground. It features underground labyrinths with stalactites and stalagmites, as well as spacious chambers that evoke Dante’s Inferno, Purgatorio and Paradiso. The cave thus offers a different point of interest from the churches and museums: its underground formations are linked to a literary world of imagery. If you organise your trip by theme, you can contrast this focus with trails through the landscape and wetlands, as well as the history of the buildings and museums.
