Pisa’s Piazza del Duomo offers a view of four masterpieces of medieval architecture: the cathedral, the baptistery, the bell tower and the Campo Santo cemetery. In December 1987, the square was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List. The four buildings share a common theme without their different forms being reduced to a single focal point.
Medieval Art and City History
At the Campo Santo, fresco cycles preserve depictions of the Triumph of Death, the Last Judgment and the stories of the holy hermits. These subjects shift the focus from architecture to medieval religious ideas. This makes it possible to explore the Piazza not only through its buildings, but also through the stories depicted in the art of this place.
The medieval walls offer another perspective on Pisa’s past. They were originally about seven kilometres long; the towers stood around 300 metres apart, and there were approximately 20 gates. Taken together, these figures give a sense of the scale and layout of the historic wall system. They tell a different kind of city history from the individual works of art in the Piazza.
Collections with Different Focuses
The collection at the Museo Nazionale di San Matteo includes illuminated manuscripts from the 13th and 14th centuries, as well as a stone sculpture collection featuring works from the Middle Ages through the 16th century. Manuscripts and sculptures offer two different ways to explore art and history. Those interested in forms, materials and periods will find more here than a single historical reference point.
The collection at the Museo delle Navi Antiche di Pisa tells a story of trade, sailors, shipping routes, life on board and shipwrecks. An excavation completed in 2016 recovered about 30 ships from the Roman period in connection with the museum. Palazzo Blu adds another distinct cultural dimension: it houses a centre for cultural activities and exhibitions established by Fondazione Pisa.
Botanical Diversity and Protected Nature
The Orto Botanico di Pisa is organised into seven mainly historical sections, each containing one or more scientifically organised plant collections. Around 3,000 plants are cultivated across approximately two hectares. Its layout and scale make the garden interesting both as a plant collection and as a scientifically organised place. The Orto e Museo Botanico offers guided tours for private visitors. Check their availability before your trip.
The Parco di Migliarino, San Rossore, Massaciuccoli offers a different perspective on the landscape. This protected natural area includes beaches, Mediterranean scrub and wetlands. The listed woodland landscapes include maritime pines, holm oaks and poplars. The Tenuta di San Rossore can be explored on foot, by bicycle and on horseback. These different options offer a practical choice of how to get around without requiring a fixed tour.
Along the coast, the WWF Dune di Tirrenia Oasis covers 24 hectares and is open year-round. Check the latest opening information before visiting. Together, the garden, nature park, estate and oasis showcase different aspects of nature that can complement a trip around Pisa.
Markets, Festivals and Getting Around
A farmers’ market selling organic produce takes place in Piazza Cairoli every fourth Saturday of the month. Check the relevant market date before travelling. The Gioco del Ponte offers a different picture of city life: twelve teams push a heavy cart on rails, positioned in the middle of the Ponte di Mezzo on the Lungarni. The festival takes place every year on the last Saturday in June; in 2026, it fell on June 27. If you would like to plan your trip around it, check the specific event dates in advance.
For getting around, Pisa’s tourist wayfinding system includes interactive maps, QR codes and four themed itineraries. The city reported it as complete on July 31, 2026; the system may be updated. For travel connections, the PisaMover links Pisa Centrale railway station with Pisa-San Giusto Galileo Galilei Airport in less than three minutes. As services and timetables can change, check the current timetable before your trip.
