In Sondrio, different traces of mountain culture lie close together: rural houses with wooden balconies, a castle with museums, and historic buildings with frescoes. The routes through the town and along the Adda also reveal different sides of the place and its surroundings. Those choosing Sondrio as a destination can focus on the town’s history and nature, and add regional routes to their itinerary according to their interests.
Mountain culture and art in the heart of Sondrio
The old farming district of Scarpatetti has preserved rural houses with characteristic wooden balconies and stone “involt.” On the climb through the district to Castello Masegra, three small Marian chapels bear witness to popular piety. The castle houses CAST, an interpretive museum about mountain culture. Its themes of climbing, mountaineering and the environment give visitors a tangible connection to the mountain world.
At Castello Masegra, MuMiVV displays mineral collections from Valtellina and Valchiavenna. A Renaissance camera picta in the castle features a fresco cycle depicting Ariosto’s Orlando furioso. The town’s art history can also be discovered elsewhere: the Santuario della Madonna della Sassella is a 15th-century sanctuary on a rocky outcrop on the outskirts of Sondrio. Its frescoes are attributed to Andrea de Passeris and dated to 1511.
The MVSA in Palazzo Sassi de'Lavizzari offers a further perspective on the history of the entire Valtellina. Six departments are devoted to its history and artistic expressions. The building is accessible to wheelchair users and fully barrier-free, with no architectural obstacles. Visitor offerings include studios and creative workshops for children, guided tours for adults, and special activities for people with disabilities.
Historic routes and buildings
The sanctuary is not the only place where architecture and art come together. Palazzo Sertoli forms part of an architecturally and artistically significant ensemble of three interconnected palaces around the historic Piazza Quadrivio. Those interested in traces of earlier settlement can find another perspective on the Sentiero dei ricordi: the route begins at the Museo Valtellinese di Storia e Arte and leads to the main archaeological sites and rock art sites in the municipality of Sondrio.
Together, the town’s themes offer a varied experience, without being limited to a single museum or period: Scarpatetti preserves a rural district, the palaces around Piazza Quadrivio form a unified ensemble, and the artworks at Castello Masegra range from the Renaissance to collections about the mountain world. These contrasts help visitors shape their visit around their own cultural interests.
Routes along the Adda and nature near Sondrio
Several routes with different features offer opportunities for outdoor activity. The Via dei Terrazzamenti is a 70-kilometre walking trail between Morbegno and Tirano; from Sondrio, it can be walked in either direction. The route has 40 rest areas in total. The Sentiero Valtellina, by contrast, is a 114-kilometre cycling and walking route from Colico to Bormio along the Adda. It is intended for non-motorised leisure and recreation. There are many rest areas near Sondrio, and the route there runs almost entirely on dedicated cycle paths.
A comparison of the two routes starts with how they are used and their length: the Via dei Terrazzamenti is designated as a walking trail, while the Sentiero Valtellina is for walking and cycling. Near Sondrio, the Sentiero Valtellina also leads towards Tirano and the Bosco dei Bordighi. The nature reserve stretches along the Adda and can be reached on foot or by bicycle via this route. Its paths are mostly flat, equipped and signposted. The forest is one of the few remaining floodplain forests on the Adda’s floodplain.
Mountain landscapes of the province
Protected landscapes also shape the province beyond Sondrio: its protected areas include one national park, one regional park, seven regional nature reserves, two natural monuments, three local parks of supra-municipal interest, and numerous Natura 2000 sites. Parco Nazionale dello Stelvio is one of these protected areas, as is Parco Regionale delle Orobie Valtellinesi. The latter encompasses the northern side of the Orobie range, considered a link between the Lombard Alps and Prealps. Its landscape is rich in endemic species and unspoilt areas.
A large part of the province lies above 2,000 metres. At lower elevations, meadows and coniferous forests give way to alpine grasslands, scree slopes and extensive glaciers. Deer, ibex and chamois can be spotted in the province’s protected landscapes; with luck, visitors may also see bearded vultures and golden eagles. In Parco delle Orobie Valtellinesi, trails cross fourteen valleys, ranging from flat routes to steep, challenging paths.
The Adda also offers a range of activities in the region: rafting, kayaking and hydrospeed are possible on the river between Piateda and Castione Andevenno; this stretch is also suitable for less experienced participants. The riverside routes, museums in Sondrio and wider mountain landscapes can therefore be considered as different focal points for a trip.
Getting around the region
The SS38 dello Stelvio state road passes through Morbegno, Sondrio and Tirano before continuing to Bormio and the Stelvio Pass. A provincial road also connects Sondrio to Valmalenco. These regional connections complement the local routes and help place Sondrio in the context of the province’s varied landscapes and towns.
