Two themes can help you get your bearings in Carlazzo: the protected landscape of the Riserva Naturale Lago di Piano and local history, with its settlements, churches, and former trades.

Landscape, Views, and Nature

The Riserva Naturale Lago di Piano is a regional partial nature reserve, a Site of Community Importance, and a Special Protection Area of the EU with code IT20202001; it covers the municipalities of Carlazzo and Bene Lario. The area of Monti di Gottro and Case Bilate in Carlazzo is also designated as a landscape of considerable public interest. The designation was published in the Italian Official Gazette on 10 July 2008. Trails through Monti di Gottro and Case Bilate offer viewpoints overlooking Lago di Piano and Ceresio.

At the Osservatorio Naturalistico, the focus shifts to other details: it features a botanical educational boardwalk with explanatory panels about the area’s vegetation zones. Views and botanical interpretation thus offer two distinct ways to experience nature. The Ponte del Saltone is another striking landmark in the landscape. It stands 136 meters above a narrow natural gorge carved by the Cuccio River.

Settlements and Cultural Heritage

The Museo Etnografico del Latte is housed in Carlazzo’s former social dairy. It displays traditional equipment used to collect, store, and process milk and butter, linking the town to the history of dairy farming. Borgo di Castello offers a different perspective on settlement history: it sits on the summit of Montecchio by Lago di Piano and preserves remains of the encircling wall, a tower house with an underpass, and several densely packed houses.

Bilate is also of historical importance. The settlement, designated as a landscape of considerable public interest, is home to the “Pretura” building, a notable historic structure. The Chiesa di San Giorgio in Gottro dates back to the 12th century and is Romanesque in style. In the apse of the Chiesa di San Giorgio is a fresco dating to the 15th century: Christ as Pantocrator is surrounded by the four Evangelists, the Madonna, and John the Baptist. The work is attributed to the brothers Cristoforo and Niccolò da Seregno.

Another notable feature of art history is the Chiesa di Santo Stefano in Gottro. It houses an organ made in 1858 by “I. R. Fabbrica Nazionale Privilegiata D’Organi Fratelli Serassi di Bergamo,” considered one of the company’s masterpieces. The parish church of Parrocchia di Ss. Giacomo e Fedele stands in the center of Carlazzo, on the slopes of Pidaggia, on the site of a former fortification.

Historic Routes and Trades

The Via del Ferro is a themed route that follows historic tracks through the Cavargna and Albano valleys in Lombardy and the Morobbia Valley in the Swiss canton of Ticino. Via the Motto della Tappa, or Cima Verta (2,078 m above sea level), it leads to mining and ironworking sites. The route brings the history of mining and ironworking into focus.

At Ponte Dovia, the ancient mule track linking Carlazzo and Cavargna passes through the area. There are also still-operating hydroelectric plants at Ponte Dovia and nearby, inaugurated in 1903. The Crotto di Castello in Carlazzo is also part of the Alpi Lepontine territorial museum system.

Carlazzo’s natural and cultural heritage offers different points of interest: its landscapes encompass protected status, viewpoints, and vegetation zones, while its cultural history spans dairy processing, settlement patterns, church art, and mining. If you are looking for hotels in Carlazzo, you can use this contrast as a starting point for planning and choose the focus that best matches your interests.
