Castelvecchio Di Rocca Barbena sits on a rocky outcrop and preserves a medieval village setting. The village is considered the oldest feudal village in the Val Neva. From the hill of the Castello dei Clavesana, there are views across the Val Neva. If you are planning a stay, you can think of the area in terms of two main interests: the village’s historic architecture and paths that lead through its lanes or into the surrounding countryside.

Lanes, arches and architectural history

The narrow, winding lanes are spanned by earthquake-protection arches that connect stone houses. Old stone washhouses are part of the village setting in its small squares. The Oratorio di S. Maria Maddalena, a parish oratory dating from the 17th century, is located in Piazza della Torre. Its features include a Baroque bell tower and a lunette depicting a saint. The parish church of Santa Maria Assunta was rebuilt in the Baroque period over an older building. Those interested in religious architecture can distinguish two clear points of interest here: the oratory in Piazza della Torre and the parish church, rebuilt over an older building. Castelvecchio also holds the Touring Club Italiano’s Bandiera Arancione award.

On foot through the village and beyond

The circular route described by the Club Alpino Italiano connects Zuccarello, Erli and Castelvecchio Di Rocca Barbena. Within the village, it follows Via S. Michele through stone arches and picturesque lanes to Piazza Cavour. From this piazza, Via del Roso leads downhill, past olive groves, fountains and terraces with dry-stone walls. The described sections have different emphases: first, the dense settlement with its arches and lanes, then the landscape with olive groves and dry-stone walls. A walking path from Castelvecchio to Zuccarello is dedicated to Ilaria Del Carretto. If you would like to choose a route based on its dedication, you can consider this path as another option.

Understanding routes and landscape

The Colle Scravaion–Giogo di Toirano stage of the Alta Via dei Monti Liguri has a high-altitude variant over the Rocca Barbena. Unlike the CAI circular route, which connects Zuccarello, Erli and the village, this route focuses on a named stage and its variant. The routes can therefore be compared by their described itineraries: a circular connection between several places and a stage with a high-altitude variant. The ZSC Monte Ravinet–Roccabarbena includes, among others, the municipality of Castelvecchio Di Rocca Barbena.

Planning your accommodation

The village lies on the Strada Provinciale 582 del Colle San Bernardo, which connects Albenga with Garessio. This road provides a clear geographical reference for planning your trip. When choosing accommodation, you can first consider whether the preserved medieval village setting or the described paths are your priority. The circular route passes through the lanes and connects several places; the Alta Via stage offers a different type of route, with its high-altitude variant. This lets you base your accommodation choice on the interests you want to shape your stay: the village’s architectural history or paths through the landscape.
