Lake Maggiore is dotted with islands whose character ranges from lush vegetation to a 17th-century architectural ensemble. There are also medieval fortresses, botanical gardens and lakeside paths. Exploring Lake Maggiore lets you discover the landscape and its history from many different perspectives – from views of blooming plant collections to fortified walls by the water.

Islands with a history of their own

Isola Bella lies in Lake Maggiore. In the 17th century, the island was transformed from a barren rock into an architectural and cultural ensemble. Isola Madre offers a different side: this eight-hectare island in the Gulf of Borromeo is lush with vegetation, and striking flowers and colourful birds shape its character. Expert gardeners lead botanical tours of the plant collections. The specific arrangements for these tours may change.

The Botanical Gardens of Villa Taranto also bring together plant diversity and landscape. Greenhouses with exotic plants stand alongside flower-filled avenues, water features and views of Lake Maggiore. Victoria Cruziana is also cultivated in the greenhouses. It is displayed seasonally, so check before your visit. The “VILLA TARANTO” boat landing is directly in front of the main entrance and is served by boats on the lake. Check transport arrangements in advance.

Fortresses, courtyards and gardens

Rocca di Angera is an exceptionally well-preserved medieval fortress. Its historic rooms, towers and courtyards are complemented by a museum and a period-style garden. The medieval garden covers 2,000 square metres and lies between a vineyard and the crenellated walls facing the lake. Admission includes a guided tour of the historic rooms, a visit to the Museum of Dolls and Toys, and entry to the garden. As current ticket inclusions may change, it is worth checking before your visit.

Further north, the Castelli di Cannero form a fortified complex on two rocky islands. It includes a main fortress and a former prison building. Cannero Walking Tales also tells the story of the Castelli: this immersive museum experience combines technology and tradition. Both the historic complex and a contemporary way of presenting history are at the heart of a visit to the castles.

Nature and discoveries along the shore

Nature trails for hiking, mountain biking and horseback riding begin on the shores of Lake Maggiore. A lakeside reserve encompasses about 30 hectares of reed marsh as well as narrow shoreline strips with willows and diverse flora. During bird migration, it is an internationally important stopover for numerous bird species. Visitors interested in landscapes and wildlife will find a different focus here than in the gardens or fortresses.

Other places to explore lie near Lake Maggiore: the Sacro Monte della SS. Trinità di Ghiffa comprises a sanctuary, three chapels and a covered Way of the Cross in a nature reserve with woodland trails. More than 40 animal species roam freely in Villa Pallavicino Zoological Park; the grounds also include a neoclassical villa overlooking the lake. An internal staircase leads up the Colossus of San Carlo Borromeo. The statue’s eyes offer a panoramic view.

Travelling by boat

Boats to the Eremo di Santa Caterina del Sasso depart from Arona or Stresa, with several sailings a day. As timetables may change seasonally, check the connection before planning your trip. The boat service to Villa Taranto, by contrast, takes you directly to a landing in front of the main entrance. Knowing the different arrival points can help you find your way as you plan your discoveries around the lake.
