At the Stazione della Transalpina, the border runs between Gorizia and Nova Gorica. This tangible border point offers an introduction to a city whose history and culture can be explored from different perspectives: archaeological finds, places of remembrance and collections spanning different eras each offer their own insights.
Museums spanning archaeology and contemporary history
The Collezione Archeologica displays finds from Gorizia and nearby areas. Its time span extends from the Upper Paleolithic through the Middle Ages to the Renaissance. The Museo della Moda e delle Arti Applicate offers another way to explore historical eras, with clothing and accessories from the 18th to the 20th century on display. Together, the collections open up two distinct perspectives: early finds on the one hand, and fashion and applied arts on the other.
The Museo della Grande Guerra focuses on the First World War in Gorizia. Photographs, weapons, medals and other artefacts illustrate life in the trenches. The museum also includes a reconstructed trench system built to scale, which visitors can walk through. Check the current access arrangements before your visit.
The Map of Memories also combines information with a hands-on visitor experience: each stop has an information totem that briefly explains its context. A QR code links to multimedia content, which may be updated.
Castle, palace and historic sites
The Castello di Gorizia still retains the appearance of a fortress and houses the distributed exhibition Theatrum Instrumentorum. The castle thus combines a distinctive historic appearance with an exhibition set within it.
The museum tour at the Fondazione Palazzo Coronini Cronberg offers another glimpse into history. It takes visitors through fifteen rooms, including the room where Charles X of Bourbon, the last king of France, died in 1836. The Villa Coronini Cronberg, its outbuildings and its park are open to visitors. Check the current visitor arrangements before your trip.
The Sinagoga Ebraica was built in 1756 and stands in the centre of the former Jewish ghetto. Its location and date of construction place it within a clearly defined chapter of the city’s history. Together with the museums and palace, it adds to a range of historical points of interest rather than a single narrative thread.
Parks with distinct character
Gorizia’s parks also reflect different ideas about public spaces. The Parco di villa Coronini Cronberg was created towards the end of the 19th century as part of an urban improvement programme intended to establish Gorizia as a garden city. The Parco della Rimembranza di Gorizia has a different focus: several shaded paths lead to its memorials.
At the Parco urbano del Castello, you’ll find a comfortable unpaved path, a large sunny recreation area, and several benches and tables. Its amenities differ from the paths leading to the monuments in the Parco della Rimembranza. The Parco di Piuma Isonzo adds an educational nature trail to these options. Depending on whether you are more interested in remembrance, a park path or natural history, these places offer different points of interest.
City transport and culinary heritage
Gorizia’s urban transport network comprises seven daytime routes, one night route and a cross-border connection to Nova Gorica in Slovenia. All routes pass through the intermodal passenger centre at the railway station. Route 1 is the network’s main line: it runs every 12 to 15 minutes and serves the city’s major sights. As route and frequency details are operational information, check the current timetable before travelling.
Gorizia’s distinctive character also includes a culinary tradition that reflects the coexistence of Latin, Germanic and Slavic cultures over the centuries. It is another expression of the city’s cultural heritage, alongside the collections, historic sites and parks that reveal different aspects of its history.
