The history of Cosenza is connected with the Crati Valley and the hills where the Crati and Busento rivers meet. The river and the elevated setting also shape the old town: it lies on the slope of Colle Pancrazio and stretches along the Crati. Monumental buildings, aristocratic palaces and churches alternate with narrow, winding streets. You can discover Cosenza through its landscape as well as its architectural and artistic history.

Old Town and Cathedral

Cosenza Cathedral combines a long history with a distinctive architectural style: it is Cistercian Gothic. Studies dating from the late 1940s place its construction in the mid-11th century. In 2011, UNESCO recognized the cathedral as a “witness to a culture of peace.” The dates mark different chapters: the estimate of its construction date is based on studies, while 1222 is associated with the cathedral’s consecration.

According to tradition, Frederick II of Hohenstaufen is said to have donated a precious reliquary cross on this occasion. The cross dates from the 12th century. Luca Giordano’s 17th-century Immaculate Conception can also be seen in the picture gallery of the Museo Diocesano. Another trace of the past is an elegant Roman funerary stele, which returned to Cosenza after more than a hundred years.

Religious Art and City History

The Museo Diocesano di Cosenza is located between the Archbishop’s Palace and the cathedral, in the former diocesan seminary. A single visit brings together important and valuable objects from the cathedral and other churches in the area. The museum visit therefore broadens the view of the cathedral to include works and objects from a wider religious context. Together with the old town’s palaces, churches and streets, they offer a varied picture of how Cosenza’s history is reflected in its buildings and collections.

Stories, Exhibitions and Outdoor Art

The permanent exhibition Consentia Itinera comprises seven rooms that present Cosenza, its history, artistic heritage, myths, events and identity. A 45-minute tour takes visitors to the city’s origins through digital storytelling. There is also a virtual flight over present-day Cosenza using VR headsets. The formats offer different perspectives: one tells the story of the city’s beginnings, while the other looks at the city as it is today.

Castello Svevo di Cosenza also combines historic spaces with cultural activities. When major exhibitions of national or international interest are held, its museum rooms regularly host exhibitions by young artists. The garden within the walls is fully open for use during the spring and summer months. With a covered stage and sound and lighting systems, it serves as an open-air theater for festivals, event series, readings and performances. Two terraces offer panoramic views over the city and the entire valley. The castle is accessible by car or public transport.

Villa Rendano also offers interactive museum activities and workshops. These include board games and treasure hunts, as well as art projects, theater performances and outdoor activities. For public art, there is MAB Museo all’Aperto Bilotti: the open-air gallery is located along Cosenza’s main shopping street. The city’s cultural offerings therefore range from collections and historic walls to art along a central shopping street.

Cuisine and Travel Information

Cosenza’s culinary traditions include fusilli, pasta e patate ara tijeddra, fried peppers and potatoes, broccoli rabe with sausage, and lagane e ciciari. They are usually served with high-alcohol red and white wines. The dishes offer another perspective on your exploration of the city: alongside the cathedral, museums and art, you can also discover typical local food.

You can reach Cosenza by car via the A3 Salerno–Reggio Calabria motorway, taking the Cosenza exit; then follow the signs to the historic center. From the train station, you can reach the city center by taxi in about ten minutes or by city bus routes 15, 16, 17 and 27. As bus routes can change, it is advisable to check the current route information before setting off. You can decide which experiences to combine: the old town, religious art, exhibitions, digital storytelling and cuisine each offer their own highlights.
