The medieval village of Badolato lies in the hills at an elevation of about 240 metres above sea level. From there, you can enjoy views of the Ionian Sea and the surrounding coast; narrow, paved lanes shape the character of the village. When choosing accommodation, you can first consider the focus of your trip: sacred art and village history, or activities by the sea in Badolato Marina. This lets you tailor your search to your own plans without assuming a particular type of accommodation.

Churches, Art and Architectural History

The present-day structure of the Chiesa Matrice del SS.mo Salvatore dates from 1612. It houses a wooden bust of Sant’Andrea Avellino, the patron saint of Badolato. The work, from the Neapolitan school, is dated to the first half of the 17th century. The Chiesa di Santa Caterina V.M. d’Alessandria also brings together several works of art: it contains a 16th-century fresco and an altarpiece depicting the mystical marriage of Saint Catherine with the Christ Child.

In the Chiesa di San Domenico, formerly called Santa Maria del Soccorso and “Do Monasteri,” the vault frescoes are attributed to the Flemish painter Guglielmo Borremans and dated to around 1730. The Chiesa di San Domenico “U Monasteri” also preserves old frescoes by the Calabrian painter Francesco Colelli. The Chiesa e Convento Madonna degli Angeli preserves a wooden group of figures of the Madonna degli Angeli by Fra Diego da Careri. The Chiesa e Convento Francescano di Santa Maria degli Angeli is dated to 1603/1605. The Chiesa dell’Immacolata dates from the 17th century and, together with the Convento degli Angeli, is among the area’s important sacred buildings.

Other historic landmarks include the 11th-century Santuario Basiliano della Madonna della SanitĂ  and the Torre Campanaria di avvistamento, built in 1539. Palazzo Gallelli is a three-storey historic residence dating from 1598. The palace houses the C.A.T./Centro di Accoglienza Turistico-Culturale of Badolato Borgo, at Via Gallelli 13. Local Stories and Seasonal Experiences

The Sentiero della Memoria Popolare is a “pietre parlanti” (talking stones) trail: it shares local stories, characters and folk anecdotes. This offers a different way to explore alongside the artworks and architectural histories of the churches. There are also religious events to consider when planning your year: the Confraternita dell’Immacolata Concezione organises three events each year. On Holy Saturday, one event includes a performance with several hundred participants; processions for Maria Santissima Assunta take place on 15 August and for the Immacolata Concezione on 8 December. Check the dates and programme before your trip.

The seasonal experiences described include communal grape harvests with tours of traditional Catoj. Traditional olive harvests are paired with tours of local olive mills and tastings of extra-virgin olive oil. Cooking classes with instruction in Italian and the Badolatese dialect are also available. If one of these experiences is important to your trip, check dates and availability in advance.

Sea, Trails and Getting There

At Spiaggia di Badolato Marina, the focus is on water sports, boat trips and days at the beach. Booking options for boat trips are described; check specific dates or current availability before making plans. Hiking enthusiasts can follow old paths and nature trails towards the Parco Naturale Regionale delle Serre Calabresi. This gives you a choice between coastal experiences and trails into the countryside as different focuses for your stay.

As of 8 May 2026, train journeys pass through Lamezia Terme Centrale, with onward connections to Soverato, Badolato and Monasterace. As of the same date, a local bus shuttle connects Badolato Marina with Badolato Borgo; details may change. Before travelling, check current train connections and timetables, as well as shuttle routes and operating hours. This makes it possible to adapt a combination of village visits, seasonal events or time by the sea to your actual travel dates.
