Discover Centuries of Architecture

The Cattedrale di San Gerardo reveals Potenza’s history in several layers. Its façade was designed by the architect Magri in the 18th century. The cathedral also preserves remains dating from the 5th to 6th centuries, attributed to the Sacellum of Sant’Oronzo. A stone bell tower dates from its construction phase in the 12th to 13th centuries. These dates refer to different elements and make the cathedral a tangible starting point for exploring different chapters of architectural history.

The Torre Guevara is the surviving part of a castle dating from the 10th or 11th century. Santa Maria del Sepolcro is classified as a settlement of the Knights Templar, built at the beginning of the 12th century. Another historic stop is Sant’Antonio La Macchia: the Capuchin hermitage, built in 1530, lies among green, tree-lined paths. The Teatro Stabile offers a different perspective. It opened in 1881 with a performance of La Traviata, adding theatrical history to the religious and medieval landmarks.

Archaeology and Art in the Collections

The Museo Archeologico Provinciale displays artworks from Hellenic Metapontum, Magna Graecia and Lucania. The Pinacoteca Provinciale has a permanent anthological art exhibition dedicated to Concetto Valente. The two collections focus on different subjects: one highlights ancient art from several historic regions, while the other presents the work of a single artist.

The Museo Archeologico Nazionale della Basilicata Dinu Adamesteanu is located in Palazzo Loffredo and presents important research findings from northern and central Basilicata. Its collection includes a child burial assemblage from Vaglio di Basilicata dating to 430 BC. This precise location and date make the collection a tangible point of reference for the region’s archaeology. Villa Malvaccaro also turns the spotlight on Roman history: it is the only Roman villa excavated in the Potenza area. Its triclinium has a mosaic floor whose central medallion depicts the Three Graces.

Routes Through the City

The Città Narrata divides Potenza into 56 places and three routes. One historic route leads from the Cattedrale di San Gerardo to the Scale del Popolo and passes through medieval gates, churches and palaces. Another route focuses on inscriptions associated with ancient Potentia. In this way, the project combines architectural landmarks with a search for traces of the ancient city. Signs with QR codes along the route provide access to multimedia content and audio stories. The routes offer different themes for exploring the city; no single route has to cover every era and place.

Roman Traces and Paths Along the Basento

The Ponte San Vito also points to Roman times: it preserves foundations from this period and is associated with the construction of the Roman Via Herculia. The Ponte Musmeci offers a very different architectural feature, an artistic work created by engineer Sergio Musmeci in the late 1960s. In Potenza, remnants of ancient road construction stand alongside a modern engineering structure, although they do not belong to the same period.

The Parco fluviale del Basento offers a riverside walking path between the Ponte San Vito and the Ponte Musmeci. A footpath along the Basento is also suitable for walks and outdoor runs. For those seeking a view rather than a riverside route, Montereale offers sweeping vistas of Potenza and the Lucanian Apennines. The city lies at an altitude of 819 metres in the upper Basento Valley. This gives you different ways to plan your stay: explore the themed routes of the Città Narrata, or walk and run along the river.
