The Kinneret Museum in Kvutzat Kinneret has ten exhibition rooms in two sections. One is devoted to the early settlement of Kinneret Farm, while the other covers the development of Kvutzat Kinneret since 1929. This places two distinct perspectives on history at the center. If you are interested in local history, this layout offers a concrete starting point for your exploration.
Local history and surroundings
In the destination’s immediate surroundings, the Yemenite community of Kinneret contributed to cultivating the land, building roads, and planting eucalyptus trees. This historical perspective complements the museum’s themes with the story of a community in the area. These contributions can therefore be considered alongside the early settlement and development of Kvutzat Kinneret as a distinct aspect of local history.
Archaeological sites in the wider destination of the Northern District
The archaeological sites in the wider destination of the Northern District include Tel Hazor and Tel Megiddo. They broaden the cultural perspective beyond the history of Kibbutz Kinneret. When planning your trip, it is helpful to consider local history and regional archaeology as distinct thematic focuses.
Tel Hazor: Upper City, palace, and water engineering
Tel Hazor is a biblical tell with significant remains of a city associated with the Bible. The visit focuses on the Upper City. Solomon’s Gate has six chambers and two towers and dates to the 10th century BCE. The Canaanite palace from the Late Bronze Age was used by the kings of Hazor in the 14th and 13th centuries BCE; it is considered the most elaborate in Israel and one of the most significant in the Levant.
Tel Hazor also preserves significant remains of an underground water collection system, an ingenious engineering achievement adapted to the geography for water storage. Three-meter-wide steps are carved into the walls of the vertical shaft of this water system. An excavated shaft at Tel Hazor is 45 meters deep. The fortifications are also remarkable: they are considered the finest example of their kind in the area stretching from southern Turkey to the northern Negev.
Tel Hazor National Park can be reached from the north and south via Route 90 toward Ayelet Hashahar. Check your navigation before setting out.
Tel Megiddo: cult history and urban planning
Tel Megiddo is one of three tells that preserve significant remains of cities associated with the Bible and are closely linked to biblical events. The Early Bronze Age temple complex is exceptional in terms of the number of its temples, the continuity of cult practices, and the documented ritual activities. The orthogonal city plan from the Iron Age offers a different archaeological perspective; it has few parallels in the Levant. Megiddo thus brings together cultic continuity and urban planning as distinct themes.
