In Bengkalis, beaches on Pulau Rupat sit alongside nature and cultural destinations in different parts of the regency. When planning a trip, you can first choose what matters most to you: the coast and birdwatching, mangroves and protected areas, or cultural stops. Information about Pantai Selatbaru and Pulau Beting Aceh also provides specific, but different, points of reference for getting there and planning your time.

Beaches on Pulau Rupat and near Selatbaru

The white-sand beach on Pulau Rupat stretches for about 17 kilometers from Tanjung Medang through Tanjung Punak to Sungai Cingam. Pulau Beting Aceh is a small island in North Rupat with white sand. Migratory birds can be observed there in the late afternoon, roughly between 4 and 6 p.m. Sightings are seasonal and not guaranteed.

From Desa Tanjung Medang or Teluk Rhu, you can reach Pulau Beting Aceh by rented speedboat in about 45 minutes. Sea and weather conditions affect travel time; arrange the rental and trip before your visit. This lets you pair the island visit with a specific time window for birdwatching without assuming a sighting is certain.

Pantai Selatbaru has a gently sloping beach with fine sand, stretching for about two kilometers. The beach is north of the capital of Bengkalis Regency, about 17 kilometers away. The journey takes about an hour by two- or four-wheeled vehicle; road and traffic conditions may affect the actual travel time. Other coastal destinations include Pantai Pesona Teluk Rhu in Tanjung Medang, North Rupat, and Pantai Prapat Tunggal in Prapat Tunggal. Pantai Ketapang is in Sei Cingam, Rupat. Pantai Indah Selatbaru is in Selatbaru, Bantan.

Mangroves, protected areas and nature destinations

Napak Tilas Mangrove Bukit Batu is a nature destination in Desa Wisata Bukit Batu. Another nature destination, the Mangrove Education Centre, is located in Pangkalan Jambi, Bukit Batu. The Hutan Suaka Margasatwa Balai Raja wildlife reserve is in Pematang Pudu, Pinggir. These places offer different ways to explore nature: mangroves, a protected forest, and destinations associated with the name Bukit Batu.

The Giam Siak Kecil–Bukit Batu Biosphere Reserve also includes Bengkalis Regency. The area is recorded as having about 189 plant species from 113 families and 59 genera; 29 of these species are protected under CITES Appendices I and III. This information may also interest travelers who want to consider the region’s plant diversity alongside coastal destinations when choosing where to go.

Cultural sites and events

Rumah Datuk Laksamana Raja Dilaut is a cultural destination in Sukajadi, Bukit Batu. The Museum Sultan Syarif Qasim is in Bengkalis Kota; check the current opening arrangements before visiting. In Desa Wisata Bukit Batu, access to Rumah Orang Kaya Raja Negara is via the river: visitors take a sampan or a pompong. Confirm visit arrangements in advance.

In May 2023, Festival Sungai Bukit Batu was a cultural festival highlighting the social culture of the people of Bukit Batu. The year is important: it refers to the 2023 festival and does not imply that it will be repeated. Rupat Beach Festival and Mandi Safar are also listed as events on the beaches of Pulau Rupat. Dates and programs may change, so it is advisable to check the relevant event details before traveling.
