The four-story tower of Benteng Moraya offers views of Lake Tondano, green rice fields and the mountain ranges around the city of Tondano. As a historical and nature-focused tourist attraction and landmark in Minahasa Regency, Benteng Moraya represents two sides of the destination: landscape and history. Reliefs set into the walls tell of the Minahasa people's origins, including the story of Lumimuut and Toar, as well as the Tondano War. Here, you can enjoy sweeping views and stories from Minahasa culture in the same place.
Viewpoints with different panoramas
Makatete Hills is located in Warembungan Village, Pineleng District, Minahasa Regency. From there, the view stretches across Manado, Manado Tua Island and the Manado coast to Mount Klabat. The panorama also includes the Sulawesi Sea and islands north of Manado, including Bunaken and Siladen.
Bukit Tetetana in Suluan Village, Tombulu District, Minahasa Regency offers a different panorama: from there, you can see the sea off Manado, Bitung and the surrounding islands, as well as cities and mountains such as Mount Klabat. By choosing different viewpoints, you can take in a variety of scenes—from Manado Tua and the coast to Bitung and the surrounding mountain ranges.
Cultural heritage and living traditions
Loji Tondano is a historical tourist attraction protected as cultural heritage. It is located in Rinegetan Urban Village, West Tondano District, Minahasa Regency. Its architecture combines Dutch influences with local Minahasa wisdom and has the character of a traditional stilt house. Loji Tondano can be reached overland from Manado by private or public transport.
The shores of Lake Tondano also bring together different cultural influences: Pura Danu Mandara Tondano is located beside the lake, preserves the inherited traditions of Balinese ancestors and is in harmony with the local culture and wisdom of the Minahasa people. Visitors interested in cultural heritage will find in Minahasa both reliefs depicting traditional stories and architectural and religious-cultural sites.
Forests, springs and waterside experiences
Ranoraindang is a natural volcanic hot spring in a forested setting. The site offers opportunities to relax, take photographs and enjoy nature adventures amid a largely unspoiled forest. Uluna, meanwhile, is a clear spring in the Lake Tondano area of Minahasa Regency. These are two distinct springs in different surroundings.
Off the coast of Minahasa, Tanjung Kelapa has relatively calm currents and is suitable for both beginner and experienced divers. Conditions at the site may vary. Minahasa therefore offers a range of nature experiences, including viewpoints, a volcanic spring in a forest setting and a coastal diving destination.
The Danau Tondano Festival was held in 2025 as a multi-day event on the shores of Lake Tondano in North Sulawesi and in the area of Minahasa Regency. If you are planning a trip around a festival, check the dates for the relevant edition.
The wider region: North Sulawesi
In the wider destination of North Sulawesi, the Bunaken Tangkoko Minahasa Biosphere Reserve lies in the heart of the Coral Triangle. It encompasses marine and terrestrial ecosystems and is home to more than 130 mammal species, including the Dian's tarsier. This regional natural setting complements the specific landscape experiences of places in Minahasa without attributing the reserve's characteristics to them.
North Sulawesi's cuisine also adds a distinctive touch to the wider region. Tinutuan is a dish known as Manado porridge, made with plenty of vegetables; Rica-Rica is a spicy Minahasa dish seasoned with aromatic spices. Alongside cultural and scenic discoveries, these regional influences offer more to explore as you consider which aspects of your trip interest you most.
