On Ternate, Batu Angus is a striking volcanic landscape: this geotourism area is characteristic of Mount Gamalama. North Maluku also offers traces of the Sultanates and memorial sites from the Second World War. This makes it possible to explore the region through a range of interests—from nature and the sea to history and culture.
Volcanic Landscapes, Forest and Sea
Aketajawe Lolobata National Park covers 167,319.32 hectares and is administratively located in Maluku Utara Province. Its area gives the protected region a specific scale. On Ternate, attention turns to Batu Angus and the volcanic landscape characteristic of Mount Gamalama; on Morotai, other landscape features define the named natural attractions.
Gorango Beach is a bay in northeastern Morotai, with tropical forest and clear blue sea. Kokoya Island offers white-sand beaches and extensive coral reefs; the island is near Dodola on Morotai. At Raja Waterfall, Morotai’s tropical forest meets terraced rock formations. The three places offer different highlights—from bay and sea to beaches and reefs, and from rock to forest.
The wildlife also has a special regional connection: the standardwing bird-of-paradise (Semioptera wallacii) is endemic to the Moluccas. On Tidore, Mount Kie Matubu, also known as Gunung Tidore, rises to 1,730 metres. Landscapes, wildlife and elevation thus offer different themes for a trip through North Maluku, without implying a specific sightseeing route.
Sultanates, Museums and Historic Sites
On Ternate, Benteng Tolukko is a historic defensive monument. The Museum Memorial Kedaton Sultan Ternate in Ternate, North Maluku, preserves the history, culture and artefacts of the Sultanate of Ternate. Its building was constructed on 24 November 1813, commissioned by Sultan Muhammad Ali, as a kedaton—that is, a Sultanate palace—and has an octagonal floor plan. Its former function and distinctive shape give the museum a specific historical and architectural context.
The Sonyine Malige Museum in the city of Tidore Kepulauan preserves traces of the Sultanate of Tidore’s long history. At present, 0 collections have been quantified there. Its themed collections include historical and ethnographic objects, among them the throne once used by the Sultan of Tidore. Ternate and Tidore thus each focus on their own evidence of Sultanate history.
On Morotai, the World War II Museum and Pitu Strip focuses on wartime history: the site houses Allied military relics, including war artefacts and aircraft wrecks. The Festival Teluk Jailolo, a major cultural event in West Halmahera, offers a different cultural perspective. These places and events provide different ways to explore North Maluku’s cultural heritage, from the Sultanates to memories of the Second World War.
Activities and Getting Around
Snorkelling is one of the activities on Dodola Island; Tabailenge Island is a destination for diving enthusiasts. For a different kind of nature experience, take the Gurabunga trail to the summit of Mount Kie Matubu on Tidore. The trail normally takes six to seven hours; conditions may vary. This time estimate can help with planning, without promising a consistent duration.
Ternate is the shipping hub of North Maluku. PELNI scheduled ships call at Ahmad Yani Port; ferries run between Ternate and Tidore (Rum) from the piers at Bastiong. If you plan to use this connection for your trip, check the current schedule. The ferry route provides a specific point of reference for travel between the two places, while checking current times before departure remains important.
From the centre of Daruba, travellers can rent motorised vehicles or a local taxi to reach various tourist destinations. Local transport options may change, so check availability before setting off. When choosing a focus for your trip, it helps to first consider whether you are most interested in Sultanate history, nature destinations, sea activities or the historic sites on Morotai. This can help you tailor your holiday rental search to the interests that matter most for your trip.
