North Jakarta City can be explored through three themes: the leisure attractions facing the Java Sea at Taman Impian Jaya Ancol, the mangroves of Angke Kapuk and the maritime history around Sunda Kelapa. This contrast can help you choose your destination and accommodation: would you like to focus on coastal attractions, nature or historical discoveries?

Coast, Rides and Mangroves

Taman Impian Jaya Ancol is in Jakarta Utara and faces the Java Sea. This 80-hectare coastal resort combines water and beach sports with rides, swimming pools, an Eco-Park and large-scale performances. A variety of leisure activities can be found side by side here. Dates and programmes may change; check them before your visit.

Dunia Fantasi, or Dufan for short, is part of Ancol. The rides listed include a large roller coaster, the Niagara waterfall, Tornado, Bianglala and Istana Boneka. Check which individual rides are available before setting off.

Taman Wisata Alam Angke Kapuk offers a different side of the coast. This 99.82-hectare area in Jakarta Utara is a mangrove nature reserve managed by Indonesia’s Ministry of Environment and Forestry. The mangrove attraction includes a suspension bridge and a birdwatching facility; there are also cycling paths and water-based activities. Check the current condition of the facilities and activities before your visit.

To get there, take Transjakarta route 1A from Balai Kota or Penjaringan towards Pantai Indah Kapuk. From there, continue on foot at the Budha Tzu Chi building. As route information can change, check your connection before travelling.

Sunda Kelapa and Maritime History

The Museum Bahari preserves collections on Indonesia’s maritime way of life and fisheries, from Sabang to Merauke. It is opposite Sunda Kelapa port, in a historic 17th-century building that was formerly used as a VOC warehouse. The collection, the port location and the building’s history each offer a distinct perspective on the maritime theme.

Menara Syahbandar also tells the story of the port’s past. The watchtower was built in 1839 and, among other things, was used to tell ships the time. A historical account describes stairs leading to the upper level: from a spacious room at the top, visitors could look out over the area of the former port of Batavia and its surroundings. Check current access arrangements before visiting.

Sunda Kelapa grew into a busy trading centre visited by foreign merchants and connected to maritime trade networks across the Nusantara and Asia. Together with the Museum Bahari and Menara Syahbandar, the port offers a historical perspective on North Jakarta’s maritime character.

Kampung Tugu and Cultural Perspectives

Kampung Tugu preserves a creole heritage dating back to Portuguese communities of the 17th century. The annual Kampung Tugu Festival, held in the area around Gereja Tugu, showcases this heritage and traditions such as Keroncong Tugu, Mande-Mande and Rabo-Rabo. Dates and programmes may change.

The wider destination of Jakarta offers further cultural perspectives. Museum Sejarah Jakarta presents Jakarta’s history from prehistoric times through the heyday of Sunda Kelapa port and the colonial period to independence; its collection comprises 23,500 historical objects and reproductions. Museum Tekstil displays batik and woven fabrics, textile tools and mixed collections, as well as up to 1,000 additional textiles. Museum Wayang exhibits Indonesian and foreign wayang figures and puppets, gamelan ensembles and wayang paintings. These examples add further Jakarta themes to the maritime and cultural discoveries of North Jakarta City.
